That’s terrifying and unfortunately common with small dogs like my chihuahua. I can’t imagine having an even smaller dog. I don’t think I could do it after the last year I had.
These breeds hate to fully chew their food and they’re so tiny.
A year ago he randomly ate a 2-3” piece of string and they had to slice open both stomach and intestine (they cut him like 1/4 the length of his body) to remove it and the scar took weeks to heal. I had to supervise him at home 24/7 and help him pee for a minimum of 3 full weeks.
Then last fall he ate 6-7 of those orange hunting earplugs and luckily this time I recognized the symptoms right away and took him to the vet before they reached his intestines so they were able to remove them all without cutting via endoscopy.
This time they can’t see anything specific after both X-ray and ultrasound other than food in his stomach (and he’s fasted since breakfast yesterday when I first took him to the vet so there shouldn’t be any food in his stomach). But there is so that means there’s some type of blockage that can be deadly (like it was for your friend’s dog) if not corrected immediately.
So today they’re doing an endoscopy first (as we speak he’s in surgery) to see if they can clear it. Endoscopy’s are ideal because they don’t have to slice him open. It’s like a camera thing and scooper they shove down the throat while under anesthesia. Not pleasant and he’ll be sore but WAY easier on the body than surgical incisions.
If the endoscopy doesn’t work they’ll have to cut him open and it’ll be weeks more likely and 24/7 supervision while the stitches heal.
Last year I spent something north of $30k all in for both. Honestly I don’t even want to know the final total. It sucks.
This one will prob be around $12k all in IF they don’t have to cut him open which I won’t know for several more hours.
If they do have to cut him open it’ll be north of $20k…again.
Which is what it is. I’ll pay any amount for my dog so I’m not complaining. There’s literally no question for me. I just handed the vet my credit card and told them to do what needed to be done.
Money doesn’t matter. My family (which my dog is) matters. The money sucks but eventually I’ll pay it all off. My dog and the value he brings my life cannot be replaced.
However, it doesn’t make dealing with this for the THIRD time in 13 months any easier.
The worst part is, there’s nothing I can do differently. It’s not like I left poison or something out and made a mistake. It’s nearly impossible to live in a home that doesn’t have some type of item a small pet could ingest and cause these blockages. And I work from home the majority of the time so he’s with me like 96% of the time. It’s hard to supervise your pet more than that.
All I can do is keep my place as decluttered as possible and like have a savings for when he inevitably eats a tiny non food item that’s still big enough to block his stomach.
It’s maddening and scary.

Prayer Request:
I’m at the veterinarian right now with my elderly, hostile Chihuahua.
This morning he started exhibiting similar symptoms as he did prior to his last two stomach/ intestinal surgeries in 2025.
If you pray, I’d greatly appreciate prayers for his healing. I’m REALLY hoping he doesn’t need another surgery.

Top Democrats including Obama , Hillary Clinton , etc strongly endorsed Karen Bass for mayor the last election
Democrat voters in Los Angeles should ask why they endorsed someone so bad that has hurt Los Angeles
Also why do these people have any credibility when they keep endorsing such horrible politicians
It was clear Caruso was the better option last election versus Bass ..
