I can’t stop crying watching this back. 😭 (happy tears of course) There was a time I truly believed I wouldn’t survive the streets of San Francisco or addiction. Last night I stood in a room full of people working to change this city and shared my story. I still can’t believe that person is me. Thank you to everyone who believed in me along the way. Recovery is possible.

The response to this post has honestly changed how I view recovery a little. I’m starting to realize recovery isn’t just about stopping drugs or alcohol. It’s also about learning how to live life again. How to build routines. How to make friends. How to grocery shop and cook. How to exercise. How to take care of yourself. How to enjoy life sober. A lot of people leave addiction with no support system, no confidence, and years of isolation behind them. Community matters more than people realize.

Lately I finally understood what a friend meant when he said there should be a “concierge service” for people in early sobriety. Not rehab. Not babysitting. Just real community. People helping people. Because honestly, I’m realizing there are so many normal everyday life things I either never learned, avoided for years, or feel overwhelmed trying to do alone now that I’m sober. I’m looking for things like: a gym buddy because I have major gym anxiety and haven’t worked out in years someone who could teach me basic cooking or meal prep learning how to grocery shop without wasting food learning how to cook low sodium/heart healthy meals since I have pulmonary hypertension and heart failure maybe someone to go do normal life things with like errands, walks, coffee, hair appointments, etc. I recently needed my hair done and realized I had nobody to ask, so I ended up making a post on Nextdoor trying to find someone affordable. It made me realize how isolated addiction can make you, even years later. I’m not looking for anything weird or transactional. No strings attached. Just community. Good honest people helping other good honest people rebuild their lives. I’m a good person. I’m trying. I want to make friends, get healthy, get out of the house more, and start genuinely living life again instead of just surviving. @missamberreid @bettersoma I think it is a brilliant idea to build off that foundation, sponsor+. I have seen friends in recovery find connection doing these things. I personally never did need recovery, knock on wood, but I always saw what they built and thought it was awesome. Informal as it was.

Honestly, the more people respond to this post, the more I think you’re right. Maybe what I’m describing already exists in a lot of ways through sponsorship and recovery communities. I think I’m just starting to understand that recovery is also about learning how to live life again, not just stop using.
