About 220,000 tonnes of gold have been mined on Earth (per World Gold Council 2025 data). Total discovered (mined + known reserves): ~280,000 tonnes, with ~60,000 tonnes in proven reserves. Yet to discover: Billions more tonnes exist in Earth's crust at trace levels (4 ppb average), plus undiscovered deposits. Economically viable new finds continue, but most gold is too dispersed to mine profitably. Asteroids: Dozens of metallic (M-type) ones contain gold/platinum (inferred from meteorites). Around 10-12 near-Earth asteroids are realistic mining candidates (small, accessible orbits). 16 Psyche is the standout (huge metal content) but in the asteroid belt—mining it is 20+ years away at best.
