Happy Foster Care Awareness Month. Reminder: we don't want your intrusive questions. Instead send us meals and your extra Kohl's cash.

Teacher Tip: When kids have their phones out , I start singing until all the phones are put away. 10/10 no phones in 5th hour yesterday. Turns out, no one likes to hear me sing Emotions by Destiny's Child. Weird?!

@BenisonMrs Correct! My daughter has dyslexia and it makes her crazy mad to try and attempt that. How is she supposed to know if its right, if there's not correct answer?!

@sarahxxlarah I like this one. I also have recently shied away from saying "family" and instead say "crew" because sometimes foster kids don't like to identify as "family" with their temporary placements. but every kids is different and it depends on the environment that I'm in.

Instead of saying, "where are you children from?" or "are your kids adopted?" Say, "your family is beautiful/lovely!" "looks like a lot of love going on with you guys." "your family made me smile today" "your kids are precious."
Mrs.Thomas@ThomasFortO

Happy Nation Adoption Day. I'm just here with a reminder that you're not entitled to know our family's story just because we don't match and you feel curious. Every child's story is their own to decide what to do with.

@ProfGoat @eduleadership fair enough. I teach Spanish so all students are required to read, write, speak and listen as spelled out in the curriculum

Yep, this is what the science says. Give kids experiences that make them stronger. Challenge them. Cold-call them. Make them do things hard enough they can't succeed without real effort. Being anxious about student anxiety only makes it worse.
Mrs.Thomas@ThomasFortO

@eduleadership I also still "cold call" on students to answer questions. The best way to learn to handle anxiety is exposure and practice.

@ProfGoat @eduleadership Then I would never cold-call on that single student again. However, I have never had this happen.

@eduleadership But..let's just say that many of us do not have confidence that higher admin will back us up if the student complains.

@MrRhodesMD @eduleadership I feel like you're implying that a student on an IEP or 504 1. doesn't understand the content 2. isn't excited to be called on when they know an answer and participate with the class. I can make sure they have an answer correct on their paper before I call on them

@MrRhodesMD @eduleadership Daily. I can point to the answer on your paper before I cold call. I can cold call you to do a "repeat after me". I find that my students who usually struggle love this, they feel accomplished and proud. I can also say, " Sally, I'm going to call on you next, are you ready?"

@eduleadership “Cold Calling” is also an easy way to give students equittable response opportunities, which is an important interaction to establish high expectations.

I feel like we should go back to telling young people to tough it out more. Like I get it—it’s an overwhelming job—but you just don’t *get* to be overwhelmed.

@IsaacWoodward25 finished his career breaking or holding the record in 5 categories. 2FG in a season (180), rebounds in a game (21), blocks in a game, season, and career (5, 44, 116), and he was the programs 5th 1000 point scorer. He had a remarkable season and career.

@edudissenter I like individual work and paired work. When I do do "group work" I would rather it be two pairs so more students are invested in the outcome. Also- I like to have individual mandates on pair projects. It's a balance for sure!
