An absolute legend. Mike was an incredible coach, leader and supporter of youth. I got to know Coach Tanner as a High School Athletic Director and always appreciated his advice. A great mentor to many in football and in high school athletics. RIP Mike and thank you 🙏 for your service to Nova Scotia youth and athletics.

94% of Nova Scotians are now attached to primary care. There’s more work ahead, and our team is focused on keeping that momentum going with more funding for healthcare in this year’s budget.

Currently Canada doesn't have the ability to launch space projects on our own, instead relying on the United States. That means turning south for getting satellites into orbit. With this project, that will change. I'm happy to see this investment being made in Nova Scotia, with the new launch pad expected to come into operation by 2028. This is an important investment for Canadian sovereignty. Another reason why Nova Scotia is the defence capital of Canada. 🇨🇦

Congratulations to Dr. Kevin Spencer and the team at Dartmouth General Hospital. A medical device developed right here in Nova Scotia by Ring Rescue Inc. will be featured on HBO Max’s The Pitt this week. What started as a practical solution for emergency rooms is now being used across North America—and even making its way onto television. Great to see Nova Scotia innovation getting the recognition it deserves. 👏

Nova Scotians voiced their concerns about parts of this year’s budget. After listening, we are restoring funding for supports for people with disabilities, seniors, and students pursuing education. These programs make a real difference in people’s lives, and protecting them is the right thing to do. We never intended to negatively impact those who rely on the disability support system in Nova Scotia. The disability support system in Nova Scotia is undergoing significant changes as we implement the Remedy, which moves to an individualized funding model. This was ordered by the courts in 2021 and is a good thing, but it became clear more time was needed to ensure this transition is successful. We will take this time. We are making record investments in healthcare, infrastructure, and education. We’re investing $66 million in arts and culture this year, which is more than when we formed government. We’ll continue to invest in Nova Scotia.

School Bus Passes - The Facts Over the past few days, I’ve heard from parents and students who are worried about changes to student transit passes in Halifax. I understand those concerns. Getting to and from school safely and reliably matters to families, and I want to reassure Nova Scotians of one simple fact: no student will lose their ability to get to school. Nova Scotia has a long-standing School Transportation Policy that guarantees transportation for students who live beyond a certain distance from their school. Elementary students who live more than 1.6 kilometres away and junior and senior high students who live more than 2.4 kilometres away are entitled to transportation. That policy remains firmly in place. We are also making sure students who rely most on public transit continue to have access to it. $600,000 is being transferred from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to the Department of Opportunities and Social Development to support youth connected to Income Assistance. This will ensure that more than 1,700 young people automatically continue to receive Metro Transit passes at no cost to their families, with no interruption in service. The discussion around this issue stems from a pilot program in Halifax Regional Municipality that provided Metro Transit passes to junior high and high school students. That pilot cost about $1.2 million each year and distributed passes to roughly 28,000 students, regardless of whether they needed transportation to meet the school transportation policy. Pilot programs are meant to test ideas and determine whether they are the best use of public funds. In this case, the pilot raised several practical challenges. Halifax Regional Municipality is geographically large, and many communities are not serviced by Metro Transit at all. Students living in places like the Musquodoboit Valley or along the Eastern Shore near Sheet Harbour received passes even though there is no regular Metro Transit service in those areas. At the same time, the passes were provided universally, meaning they were distributed to many students who already had reliable transportation options, maybe even their own car. Another challenge is that there is limited data on how often the passes were used. Because students simply show their pass when boarding the bus, there is no digital tracking of usage. Without reliable data, it becomes difficult to determine whether a universal pass program is delivering the best results. Our responsibility as government is to make sure programs are focused where they make the greatest difference. Redirecting funding to ensure that youth connected to Income Assistance automatically receive transit passes is one way we are doing exactly that. At the same time, the transportation policy that guarantees school bus service remains unchanged. Some schools may continue to provide transit passes to students who qualify under that policy, while others may use yellow school buses where that makes more sense. The key point for families is straightforward: students will still be able to get to school. Budgets always require difficult decisions, and part of responsible government is reviewing programs regularly to ensure they are delivering results and reaching the people they are meant to help. When adjustments are needed, we make them thoughtfully and with a clear focus on outcomes. Every student in Nova Scotia deserves a fair opportunity to succeed. Making sure they can get to school safely and reliably will always come first, and we will continue to focus our resources where they make the greatest difference for students and families.

Nova Scotia’s economy has to grow. Across Canada, provinces are facing deficits and slower revenue growth. And we’re not immune. To unlock our full potential, we need new sources of revenue that allow us to build and grow. In a time of growing global uncertainty, saying yes to developing our own natural resources will make Nova Scotia stronger, more resilient, and more self-reliant. More jobs. Greater investment in our communities. Lower energy prices.

Nova Scotians deserve reliable power, fair rates, and real choice. For too long, one company has controlled the system. More competition in our energy market means better service, more options, and lower costs over time. With the announcement last week, it's finally happening. Real competition for Nova Scotians to finally have a choice in who they get energy from.
