They look good and both have had very successful careers, it should make you hopeful to see middle aged people who have still maintained the ability to fall in love, have fun, and dress like they aren’t one foot in the grave. They’re full of life, this is wonderful news

The perception comes from the fact that women tend to settle in mass with their “long term partners” and it’s the reason the divorce rate & sexless marriages are so high. While the “hookup” got away without having to give anything away in compromise

It is weird when people assume that hookups are higher quality people than long term partners. They're assuming the fact that it was short meant that you "couldn't keep them" and therefore they were higher quality. But the reality is more like you said, they met a baseline criteria for that night, but not the higher standards that you set for a long term partner.

Why do men get mad when I say this? My last boyfriend was someone I took home from a party — hot enough for a one night stand and also met my criteria for a relationship. My boyfriend before that made me wait 8 dates, but with the one before that, I slept with him on the first date. The only criterion for sex is bare minimum physical attraction. The criteria for a relationship is higher physical attraction, intellectual connection, emotional safety, shared long term goals, etc.

The way I see it, most women are horny and trying to get laid, but men often ruin this by being disrespectful or otherwise not meeting the required standards. Once I was genuinely trying to hook up, and then this guy said, “Women have never been oppressed.”

@williamennin @jess_ann_pin This is only valid if you are talking about men with little to no options and no abundance of it. Guys that can barely attract a woman would behave like you just mentioned in a FWB situation. But i was not referring to those guys in my comment above.

@TimothyPortal @jess_ann_pin This is false. Men are generally territorial. Guys tend to enjoy FWB when they are setting the terms, because it means the woman is really into them and won't sleep with other men. When a woman initiates FWB, it makes men feel insecure because they don't have control.

I had a much higher opinion of men when my serious dating experience was low and casual experience was high. Casual relationships that women seek out on their own and define the terms is are the lowest risk type of relationship. The risk comes from emotional vulnerability and from men lying and being disrespectful. Casual might be less rewarding, but it carries the lowest risk of any damage, especially when the woman seeks it intentionally. That does not mean it’s the best model for society or for children. But when women seek it out, it often ends up flipping the stereotypical gender dynamic and leads to the man asking for more so it might work fine for society for women to seek casual but be open for more if the man wants that. People think it’s not in male nature to want more. But I think it really is. The only risk is if you keep them in the casual box for too long they may perceive rejection and resent you for it. For some reason one of my ex fwbs starts yelling at me and calling me names whenever I give him the opportunity for more. He always berates me for other men he thinks I like even if we are just friends. Also, before I started seeking it out, I was going months without sex and only having sex with exes who wanted to marry me, which wasn’t really fair to them. I also got addicted to porn, and I would say casual sex is more healthy than watching porn all the time.
