On Thursday, we dedicated a monument at CarMax Park honoring the Richmond 34, a group of 34 Virginia Union University students who were arrested following a peaceful sit-in protest at a whites-only lunch counter at Thalhimers Department Store in downtown Richmond on February 22, 1960. As part of the Richmond 34 Legacy Campaign, the Flying Squirrels organization remains committed to preserving the Richmond 34's story, forever commemorated on the monument's pedestal plaque. The names of the 34 students arrested are displayed inside a large "34,"which was retired by the team in 2021. We will always remember and honor the impact of the men and women whose non-violent actions, including those of William B. Thalhimer Jr., changed history in Richmond and throughout our country. The Richmond 34 monument was designed by Sir James Thornhill and fabricated by Wellcraft Manufacturing in Richmond.
