Neurodermatitis: How a Skin Bacterium Can Strengthen the Skin Barrier 🔬 👉 t1p.de/mx3bs A new study reveals the surprising role of the harmless skin bacterium Staphylococcus hominis in #neurodermatitis (atopic dermatitis). Researchers have discovered how this bacterium interacts with skin lipids and the microbiome to influence disease progression. 💡 Neurodermatitis affects up to 20% of children and 10% of adults, often with a compromised skin barrier that lets allergens and pathogens in. This research highlights protective skin microbiota as a promising therapeutic approach. Key findings: ✨ Staphylococcus hominis reduces disease-associated lipids and inflammatory responses in skin models. ✨ It improves skin structure and regulates genes that promote inflammation. ✨ Acts as a natural counterbalance to the potentially harmful Staphylococcus aureus. 🔗To the original publication: t1p.de/wfpiv @ReigerMatthias @Traidl_Hoffmann @IEM_Augsburg @TU_Muenchen @UniFreiburg @karolinskainst @Lipotype_Global #Research #Microbiome #AtopicDermatitis #HelmholtzMunich

Four Pillars for a Healthy Future 🌍 A new expert commentary, published in The Lancet, highlights how environmental changes – such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss – are increasingly affecting human health. The piece reflects growing collaboration between the Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries communities, aiming to better connect Earth system science with health research and policy. 💬 “As physician, I see the symptoms – heat stress, respiratory diseases, allergy epidemic – but science gives us the prescription: systemic change for a healthier planet and healthier people," says Prof. Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann, Director of the Institute of Environmental Medicine at #HelmholtzMunich and co-author of the article The authors identify four priorities for action: ▪️Monitoring links between environmental change and health ▪️Equity-focused policy approaches ▪️Full cost-benefit accounting ▪️Clear and inclusive communication strategies 🎉 Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission report that first introduced Planetary Health as a framework linking human well-being to the stability of Earth’s systems. 👉Read more: t1p.de/d6o50 @Traidl_Hoffmann @RockefellerFdn @TheLancet @uni__augsburg #PlanetaryHealth #PlanetaryHealth10 #PlanetaryBoundaries #PublicHealth #ClimateAndHealth

Ocean warming from burning oil and gas fuels stronger hurricanes and rising seas. The longer we ignore the science, the more we lose. You can’t win against the laws of physics. #Helene2024

Open Access: Allergenic potency of various foods of mammalian origin in patients with α-Gal syndrome. First author: Marija Perusko; corresponding author: Marianne van Hage Read the article here: doi.org/10.1111/all.16… The study aimed to investigate the allergenic potency of various foods of mammalian origin among patients with α-Gal syndrome. The allergenic potency of foods of mammalian origin depends on the origin of the meat, the different cuts, and type of processing, with innards posing the greatest risk to patients with α-Gal syndrome. Even processed meat constitutes a risk, and some processed meat products pose equal allergenic potency as lean meats.
