@BenjaminDEKR @toddscarbrough You need to read the book man. They don't sense light. They see with sound. Their atmosphere is so thick light doesn't reach the planet surface. There are some stretches in there, but hey it's science fiction after all.

A big problem with Project Hail Mary: the science and engineering is so dumbed-down that it's borderline comical. Problems get solved almost magically, with no process or iteration. He meets alien life, shows it a clock, and five minutes later is having conversations. (His laptop magically translated the language, I guess.) Grace is charming (unbelievably so) but isn't shown as a good scientist. He's shown as a fantastically-lucky scientist. The Big Bang Theory had a similar problem, pretending to be a show for smart, techy people but mostly just winking at it. In other words it's pop science when the world desperately needs hard engineering to be celebrated. Still a good movie, but not nearly the classic it could and should have been.

I read the book. They did make Rylands character a little less competent on screen. For example, in the book, he solves the astrophage breeding question himself. In the movie, he needs the help of the guard. However, it makes sense they way they scripted it. There is so much internal dialogue in the book. They had to engineer ways to make it watchable. The guard and Ryland working together, the ship logs, etc ...

This is great. However, it makes me wonder about the decision to completely redesign the ship for the Project Hail Mary movie. In the book, it's a simple design powered entirely by astrophage. No solar panels. I wonder what was behind this decision.

tbh, as a long time power user of this app, this metric does not match my experience my assumption is that this is due to ai agents as opposed to actual human users enjoying the app more again, ymmv, but my personal experience is an inverse enjoyment to this graph

Outside of the fact that the film is incredibly well-made, I’ve been ruminating on why Project Hail Mary has struck such a cultural chord. I think it comes down to the reality that society is starving for hope. “Cool guy” cynicism is dead. People are craving “earnest,” even when it’s cheesy. We’re through resonating with jaded and bitter characters that turn up their nose at concepts of goodness and self-sacrifice. We want someone who stares the apocalypse in the face and still finds a reason to have hope, crack jokes, and love their friends well. They pushed nihilism HARD, and it has been thoroughly and utterly rejected by the masses. PHM is a return to meaningful storytelling, rather than disillusioned content-creation.

Elon Musk offered to pay TSA salaries so travelers wouldn’t have to wait for hours at airports. Instead of praising him, the media twisted it into “he should pay his taxes instead”. The truth is he is already the highest individual taxpayer in history and will pay over $500 billion in taxes over his lifetime. They don’t show the good he does, only the story they want you to believe. It’s crazy how they brainwash people.

@HailMaryLogs Look a bit closer, what Ryland is wearing is a fox motif.

In the Project Hail Mary movie, Ryland Grace is seen wearing a vintage sweater featuring a traditional Cowichan wolf motif. That means he has not only two wolf heads on the front but also two large wolves on the back. This type of wear reflects his simple, down-to-earth nature.

I jumped on the hype train and just finished reading Project Hail Mary. It was great! I haven't made time to read fiction for a while, but I want to keep going. What should I read next?
