Thread. Congress has a consistent pattern of blocking the Women’s Reservation Bill whenever its implementation becomes imminent. From 1996 through multiple attempts under the Vajpayee government, to failing to pass it in the Lok Sabha in 2010, Congress repeatedly obstructed the bill. In 2023, it supported the bill only when implementation was delayed far into the future. However, when a 2026 proposal sought to enforce women’s reservation in the 2029 elections, Congress and its allies opposed it again, indicating resistance not to the idea in principle, but to its immediate implementation.

No PM has ever used a national address to openly criticise and target the opposition in this manner. PM Modi has broken this long-standing democratic norm with his address to the nation tonight. By directly attacking opposition over the Women’s Reservation Bill and likening their actions to ‘foeticide’ and being ‘anti-women’, this speech has made it evident that the BJP is willing to go to any extent to undermine healthy parliamentary conventions and constitutional traditions. It’s evident that Govt has lost its balance after the drubbing it got in the Loksabha yesterday. High time this rhetoric be stoped..
