@JoshDaws Any chance that they'll start putting out more old movies on Blu/4k now that they're partnered with Sony (and apparently closed their own home video department)? Or even licensing them out to other companies like Criterion and Kino? Really hoping for some Muppet 4ks over here...

There is a whole underworld economy hiding in plain sight. In places like South Austin, Tx. These "trap hotels" operate as sovereign territory. The dealers literally pay the motel owners a massive premium just to own the block and run their "natural commerce" without interference.

@L0m3z I've always found it annoying that there's no left-wing version of reactionary in common usage. I think "woke" is the closest we've come.

"Reactionary" is just one of those spooky floating signifiers that just means "BAD." The author indicating to his reader right from the jump: "Lest, you get any ideas, you're not supposed to like this guy!" Ah well. The article actually gets a lot right.

@herandrews @PassagePress Did @L0m3z actually tell Douthat that "His goal ... was to build a reactionary cultural apparatus," in those words?

@DanielHood4 Might be a little subdued to qualify for a "sploitation," but this is a solid flick.

Hagsploitation is a horror subgenre that never (or hardly) gets mentioned on here but some of them are pure campy gold. Here are 4 that I would highly recommend for a fun's night viewing

The kid who gleeked The kid who could burp the alphabet The kid who could turn his eyelids inside out These were archetypes of the 1990s and they weren't exactly that great.

@DanielHood4 How do you figure Mill of the Stone Women influenced the genre?

Okay, because I am tired of everyone playing silly buggers - Here are 4 horror movies that actually did change the genre - Boardinghouse (1982) Cannibal Holocaust (1980) Thirteen Women (1932) Mill of the Stone Women (1960)

Lisa (1990) ☎️ Richard is loosely based on Richard Ramirez, the notorious "Night Stalker," who killed fourteen people in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas between April 1984 and August 1985. The movie was originally intended to be released straight to video. However, director Gary Sherman felt that the movie was strong enough to warrant a general theatrical release. MGM was more interested in putting the film directly to video because of the lucrative profits it stood to make from it. Nevertheless, MGM allowed the movie to go into a limited theater release of about 200 theaters over a weekend. The movie made four million dollars in that one weekend, prompting Sherman to push for a wider release. However, MGM eventually declined and put the movie straight to video and on HBO, from which they made a substantial amount of money.

@brianchaley At my resolution, the poster for The Right Stuff looked like it said The Duff, so I clicked in here to see what was going on.

Alright, started a Great American Movies list. Criteria is weirdly specific on my end, but I’m open to suggestions. Got some easy ones down, give me your picks.

The problem with doing a reboot of The Twilight Zone is that no one right now has Rod Serling's intellectual or moral rigor.

@CoffeeJezus @poetcinematic I don't know what the streaming availability is like in the UK (or what your VPN situation may be), but several of his films are on the Criterion Channel in the US. As for discs, Criterion and Kino have put out a lot of his films on Blu, if you can do region one!

@TwoTapes @poetcinematic Appreciated, thank you. I went through a number of New Wave films a few months back and really enjoyed them, and was really taken with what I've seen here. It seems there was a fairly chunky Arrow Video box set, but it's going for daft prices.

@poetcinematic Is this a collection of scenes from all of Rohmer's work, or a title/few titles specifically? This looks very much my thing.
