As meningitis returns to the headlines, Marissa Mullans knows the reality behind them all too well.
She lost her son, Alfie, aged just 18 in 2023.
“Meningitis stripped us of a bright future that should have been, ruthlessly snatching Alfie away at the tender age of eighteen,” she said.
Marissa has since been campaigning for wider access to the MenB vaccine for 16–23-year-olds—an age group she says has been left behind.
“Many teenagers and young adults missed out simply because they were born too early.
Unless families knew and could pay, they were left unprotected.”
Although a vaccine exists, it’s only been routinely offered on the NHS to babies born after September 2015, leaving others to rely on private access if they could afford it.
Some experts have also raised concerns that pandemic lockdowns may have increased vulnerability in this age group, as social mixing returned but immunity gaps remained.
For Marissa, the ask is simple: “I’m not asking for the world, I just want children to have access to a licensed vaccine to prevent further loss of life.”

Should sanitary products be free?
Period poverty is worsening across the UK as the rising cost of living leaves many struggling to afford basic sanitary products. Around 37% of women say they have had to use tissue instead of proper period products. Scotland has taken a different approach — becoming the only country in the world to provide free period products nationwide.
Now, a petition on Change.org is calling for the rest of the UK to follow suit. Petition starter Kayleigh Davies says the change would “provide dignity and equality for all women in the UK”, adding that the financial strain has been so severe she has even considered “resorting to extreme measures such as undergoing a major surgical procedure just to escape this unnecessary and relentless expense.”

As the Kent meningitis outbreak dominates the public conversation, a petition on Change.org demanding the NHS extend the MenB vaccine to 16–23 year olds has surged past 43,000 signatures, reigniting a year-long campaign to close a coverage gap that a grieving mother says cost her son his life.
Marissa Mullans from Manchester launched her petition in October 2024, following the death of her son Alfie the previous year, aged just 18. "Many teenagers and young adults missed out simply because they were born too early," she says.

English

As the BBC moves to have Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation case against them thrown out of a US court, a petition demanding that the BBC not pay Donald Trump has reached nearly 50,000 signatures on Change.org.
The petition starter, Ian Fisher, argues: “Any decision to compensate Trump, a figure whose political and business dealings have been mired in controversy, would be inappropriate and against the ethos of public service broadcasting.”
Do you agree? If so, add your support to Ian’s campaign.

Sarah Michelle Gellar may have saved the world as Buffy — now fans are trying to save the series.
Hopes rose when reports suggested Hulu was exploring a revival of the iconic ’90s show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao — who recently directed Hamnet — attached to helm the pilot. But Gellar has since revealed the project will no longer move forward at Hulu.
In response, fans have launched a petition urging the streaming giant to reconsider. Petition starter Elliot Jarvis wrote: “We must unite to express how imperative it is for this project to return to production. Whether through Hulu, Disney, or another platform willing to embrace this opportunity, Buffy: New Sunnydale deserves a chance to thrive.”

Channel 4’s Dirty Business put the UK water industry under the spotlight — exposing the scale of sewage spills, questioning executive bonuses, and examining whether regulators did enough to hold companies accountable.
Sir James Bevan served as Chief Executive of the Environment Agency from 2015 to 2023, during much of that period.
Now, close to 3,000 people have signed a petition calling for his knighthood to be removed.
Carly Hawridge says she felt “compelled” to launch the petition out of “complete disgust”, with Sir James Bevan “portrayed in the docudrama as a key figure in ignoring the detrimental environmental impact of sewage discharge into our rivers and possibly covering up such actions.”

🚨 In less than 12 hours, almost 5,000 people have signed a petition calling on the University of Kent to close its campus following an outbreak of meningitis in the Canterbury area, which has left two people dead and 11 in hospital.
One psychology student, Albert, wrote on the petition: "I will not be attending my exam if they do not change my courses to online. I have faith they will as my friends in different courses have received emails saying their exams are being moved to online, but the Psychology students have had zero communication so far. I would rather fail and resit than risk getting the infection and risk passing it onto my family / vulnerable members of my family too."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plans to scale back jury trials are facing mounting backlash, with more than 3,200 lawyers — including 300 senior barristers — signing a letter urging him to reconsider the proposals. ⚖️
The government argues the reforms are necessary to tackle record court backlogs. Defending the plans, Justice Secretary David Lammy said that “justice delayed becomes justice denied,” pointing to delays in bringing cases to trial as a key driver behind the proposed changes.
At the same time, a Change.org petition calling on the government to ‘stop abolishing the right to trial by jury’ has gained significant traction. The petition starter, Kevin McGrath, argues that “in a democratic society, the right to a fair trial is a cornerstone of justice and a fundamental human right. This right is embodied in the form of a trial by jury.”
More than 67,000 people have signed the petition so far, with supporters voicing concerns about fairness and public confidence in the justice system. Patricia, from Oxford, said “I supported the petition because I am from a working class family and know from experience that magistrates and judges always take the word of the police against that of a working class person.”
It is expected that The Conservatives will try to force a vote to try to block the second reading in parliament on Tuesday. Nick Timothy, Shadow Justice Secretary has accused the government of mounting “an unacceptable attack on an ancient right”.

A new petition has been launched on Change.org after former police officer Callum Denley received a suspended prison sentence for repeated child sexual abuse image offences.
Denley was first convicted while serving as a police officer. He was later convicted again for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Last week he pleaded guilty to further offences, including making and possessing illegal images, possessing a prohibited image of a child, and breaching his SHPO again. He was handed a 14-month sentence - suspended for two years - and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187.
The case has prompted public concern. Petition starter Sarah Crompton says that “crimes involving the exploitation of children must be treated with the seriousness they deserve.”
She is calling for the Attorney General’s Office to review the sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme and consider referring it to the Court of Appeal. Under the scheme, the Attorney General must refer a sentence within 28 days of sentencing. The petition aims to gather signatures before that deadline expires.

A council has banned a grandmother from feeding stray cats 🐈
Her granddaughter, Hannah Cutts, who has launched a petition to ‘revoke the antisocial behaviour warning’ from Barnsley Council, says: “Instead of punishing her, we should be applauding her efforts and kindness, which, in essence, uphold the values of compassion and charity.”
She added that her nan has gone “above and beyond by providing them with food, ensuring they receive the necessary medical treatments, and even arranging for them to be neutered.”

Louis Theroux’s new documentary Inside the Manosphere has premiered on Netflix, renewing public debate about the growth of online male-supremacist communities and the global spread of misogynistic rhetoric.
The release comes nearly a year after a Change.org petition gathered more than 155,000 signatures calling on Spotify to remove Andrew Tate’s courses from its platform. Spotify ultimately removed the content, effectively demonetising one income stream linked to a figure widely associated with the manosphere movement.
As streaming platforms, social media companies and audiences continue to grapple with questions of free speech, platform responsibility and online radicalisation, last year’s petition is a reminder of the power of collective action. Starting a petition is simple — but its impact can be far-reaching.

A petition signed by more than 15,000 people is calling for this year’s Crufts Best in Show title to be reviewed following the resurfacing of a past animal cruelty conviction.
Lee Cox won the top prize at Crufts with his four-year-old Clumber Spaniel, Bruin. Shortly after the event, it was reported that Cox had been convicted in 2001 following a prosecution by the RSPCA.
At the time, he was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog in his care. He received a three-year conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £5,000 in costs. He was not banned from owning or showing dogs.
The Royal Kennel Club has confirmed the conviction. Crufts organisers have not announced any plans to revoke the award.

Over 2,000 people have signed a new petition to keep Sir Winston Churchill on British banknotes, after the Bank of England confirmed that future designs could replace historic figures with wildlife — the category that received the most public support in its recent consultation.
If implemented, the change would end more than 50 years of featuring prominent figures from Britain’s history on our currency, including Churchill, Alan Turing and Jane Austen.
Petition starter Sue McDonald, who describes Churchill as a “national hero”, is urging the Bank to reconsider. She says, “Winston Churchill is an integral part of British history and identity. For many of us, he represents a symbol of strong leadership and resilience during one of the darkest periods of our national story – World War II”.

A petition calling on the government to block taxpayer money being used to fund Ian Huntley's funeral, or any prison memorial service, has surpassed 40,000 signatures in less than 48 hours, as the Justice Secretary faces mounting pressure to act.
In response to a long-standing Ministry of Justice scheme that requires the prison service to contribute up to £3,000 of public money towards funeral costs for any prisoner who dies in custody, Carly Batley launched her petition on Change.org on Sunday. Prison protocol also mandates a memorial service organised through the prison chaplaincy.
Do you agree with her call?
