Three Texas tax return preparers – a tax return preparation business owner and two of his employees – were sentenced today to 50 months, 26 months, and 18 months in prison for their roles in conspiring to file false tax returns on behalf of clients. “No matter the scheme, the agency, or the program involved, those who cheat on their taxes for personal enrichment undermine the very foundation of public trust,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald. “The Fraud Division is working across all fronts to detect, investigate, and prosecute criminal tax violations. Eight North Carolina Return Preparers PLEAD GUILTY in Almost $25M Pandemic-Relief Fraud Scheme “Instead of honoring their legal and ethical duties as tax preparers, this group allegedly engineered a calculated scheme to enrich themselves by submitting false returns,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald. “Stealing taxpayer funded relief in a national emergency is both reprehensible and deeply harmful to the public, and we will not hesitate to hold accountable those who exploit a crisis for personal gain. At the same time, the division will fight to ensure that the U.S. remains energy dominant for the next 250 years.

The Department hosted a powerful roundtable discussion today with @USDOJFraudDiv and other key voices in the fight to expose the prior Administration's weaponization of government against parents. Former AG Garland’s October 2021 memo — issued in response to an NSBA letter which labeled parents as 'domestic terrorists’ — activated the FBI and U.S. Attorneys to intimidate parents speaking out at school board meetings. AG Bondi immediately rescinded it and we have taken steps to ensure this weaponization never happens again. This DOJ will always vigorously defend parental rights nationwide.
