You don't have to travel far to find opinions on plans for the new White House State Ballroom. What's indisputable is that the $200M project, due to break ground in September 2025, will be the largest expansion of the ultra-secure complex in decades.
Not since the full mansion renovation of the early 1950s has a project this large unfolded on the grounds, and not since the addition of the current East Wing and Presidential Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) beneath it has the building's floor area been expanded so substantially.
The roughly 90,000 square foot (circa 8,300 square metre) hall would more than triple the capacity of the building's current largest space, the East Room, enabling The White House to seat up to 650 guests indoors, rather than in tents on the South Lawn.
In a statement, the president's chief of staff Susie Wiles said: “President Trump is a builder at heart and has an extraordinary eye for detail. The President and the Trump White House are fully committed to working with the appropriate organisations to preserve the special history of The White House while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future Administrations and generations of Americans to come.”
The project has been designed by McCrery Architects and AECOM, with Clark Construction leading the site works.
The White House has said that the project will be completed "long before" the end of President Trump's second term in January 2029.
