The point of the original I Am legend book is that the main character has forsaken his own sympathy and identity in the pursuit of destroying monsters, Only for him to discover that the vampires Have developed a complex society nearly indistinguishable from the human civilization he longs for Leading to him discovering that he is their version of the boogeyman; A legend, A horrible monster that has been hunting and killing them for what is in their eyes simply existing. Yes, you can sympathize with him, You can support him, You can want him to win, But the point is that his own victory results in the death of what is left of humanity; The vampires themselves.

@czkillz1 @ntx_vdcrx The book makes it clear they're no longer humans. They don't retain their humanity, they just develop between zombies who are intelligent and those that aren't. The intellegent zombies cull the dumb zombies and create a new society. Everything else was accurate.

The "monsters" did not "usurp" anything, They are just people infected with a Vampiric-Like disease, split roughly into two categories of feral and civilized, They still retain their humanity and identity For the most part, And by the end of the book are reestablishing civilization independent of the one remaining uninfected human. He is entirely justified in every action he undertakes in the book from the perspective of saving "humanity," until he himself realizes he is not saving anything, He is alone, The last survivor of an effectively dead species, Who has spent years hunting and killing for all purposes people. He has become a legend, a monster, that is feared. Which he realizes after he befriends one of the vampires, before he takes his own life after he realizes that he has been murdering innocent people, to avoid execution, And he comes to regret his choices In the end. This is not even a Reddit take. This is just what the book is.
