Keir Starmer gave Jim Ratcliffe £650 million to relocate Scotland's jet fuel refinery to Belgium last year. The only jet fuel production facility in The British Isles was Grangemouth...

@spudulike1965 In very simple terms, twice as much petrol comes from a barrel of crude as petrol.

@dunn_outdoors @spudulike1965 Various UK governments allowed 6 refineries to close from 2009-2025, most of these produced huge amounts of petrol & diesel and they turned most of them into import terminals

@spudulike1965 You'd probably need ask the petrochemical companies. The only government intervention is the imposition of taxes, a percentage of the total price, which hasn't changed.

@PtailormanCliff @spudulike1965 @jemmm85517813 Diesel is far more heavily refined than petrol as it needs to meet tough sulphur specifications. UK governments allowed 6 oil refineries to close here over the past 16 years, so now we have to import lots of diesel.

@julianHjessop The government needs to cut fuel duty by 10p on petrol & 20p on Diesel for 30 days and then reassess. The BOE will raise interest rates as inflation rises - due to fuel price rises - so a double whammy if the government fails to act. A recession is coming unless something is done

This won't be popular, but IMHO the UK government is right to resist calls to slash fuel duty (at least for motorists)... ⛽️ 1⃣ higher prices are the least bad way to manage demand in the face of a supply shock 2⃣ petrol prices are still not particularly high in real terms 👇
