For the second time in six months, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 operated by Russian airline Red Wings suffered an in-flight engine failure - the cowlings on the second engine broke off. The incident became the fourth recorded case involving the separation of engine cowling panels. The latest one occurred on June 18. A previous similar case involved a Superjet operated by Rossiya Airlines. Two other such incidents had earlier been recorded on aircraft belonging to Azimuth Airlines. Investigations by Rosaviatsiya authority into all three previous cases reached the same conclusion: the engine cowling latches had not been properly secured following maintenance. The commission found that specialists from Yakovlev Corporation, who had serviced the aircraft in Vladivostok, Russia, failed to comply with maintenance procedures when closing the cowling locks. Following the investigation, Rosaviatsiya recommended that Yakovlev equip the Superjet 100 fleet with additional safety devices and revise the technical documentation. Airlines and maintenance organizations were also instructed to strengthen oversight of maintenance work and pre-flight inspections. 📹: for illustration purposes / 2025
