Yesterday I received a handwritten letter from a good friend. No occasion at all, just appreciation. I read it twice, first to believe it was real, then to absorb what it meant. I shuffled through the past year looking for a motive, some favor I'd done that required returning. Nothing. This wasn't transactional. It was intentional. I tucked it into my journal, the kind of thing you keep, not throw away. If he'd sent a text, I might not have even opened it, just glanced at the notification on my screen. But this? I'll carry this with me. A treasure that gets revisited. A handwritten letter made me feel appreciated. He said he valued my wife and I's friendship, but the fact that he got a card, found a stamp, hand-wrote his message, walked it to a mailbox, that showed me he really did. He could have sent a DM in five seconds. Instead he chose stamps and mailboxes and effort. That's how I know he meant it. The letter created a ripple extending into today.
