We know many District residents are frustrated and fed up with rising electric bills. The truth is that most of your bill is driven by regional factors outside of local control: surging demand on our grid, retiring power plants, strict federal reliability requirements, and the cost of transitioning to renewable energy. What can we do? Continue being a strict gatekeeper. We audit the local delivery portion of your bill, reject unjustified utility spending, and are currently conducting a formal, ongoing investigation into energy affordability to find long-term solutions for residents. Interesting: In a D.C. Council hearing, @charlesallen says that only 20% of eligible D.C. residents are enrolled in utility discount programs. "These are systems that are set up to make lower-income working families prove their poverty over and over again," he says.
