@Magnum_442 @LukeHosey @BrianRoemmele So what would be the advantage of putting up a whole separate space shuttle to just do what you were gonna do anyway, without said shuttle?

@EX_EV0LUTIONIST @LukeHosey @BrianRoemmele Those are fuel cells (already containing fuel) and they aren’t returning from orbital velocity. It would take far more fuel to slow something from 17,500 mph.

Erm. Doesn't Musk do that frequently with his rockets? Of course, they're not manned, but I don't see how that matters one way or the other. I'm not a rocket scientist by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd think that he might be able to help with the issue of a powered descent.

@LukeHosey @BrianRoemmele It is risky, but we currently don’t have the capacity to carry the amount of fuel that would be required for a powered descent. To my knowledge, it’s never been done.

@BrianRoemmele Dumb question: why can’t they do a rocket burn or something to slow down the ship before it begins to enter the atmosphere? Would keep the heat way down and keep comms up. Seems like a very risky thing that should be avoided.

when spacex was getting started, the first and last men to walk on the moon testified before congress against it. gene cernan told congress commercial space companies "do not yet know what they don't know." he said the boeings and lockheed martins were "the folks who have been working on everything we've done for the last 50 years. they know how it can be done." neil armstrong said he was "not confident" the newcomers could achieve their goals. together with jim lovell they warned it would put america on "a long downward slide to mediocrity." spacex now launches more rockets than every country on earth combined. the experts will always tell you it can't be done. build it anyway!

@Wolmsicus @MLB Ok, the technique of what he's doing is objectively impressive, especially the fast register shifting stuff...but YES I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the pitchiness. Could I do what he did? No. But I did expect a more pitch-consistent performance given the billing. Oof.

What the Artemis II astronauts did over the last 10 days was a testament to their bravery. And the fact that they traveled farther from Earth than anyone ever has, re-entered our atmosphere at more than 24,000 mph, and splashed down safely was a testament to human ingenuity. Thanks to everyone at @NASA for making this mission possible, and for taking us along for the ride.

@SeekerWheat @WIFBLUB @AsyncAndy It’s a first date, there shouldn’t be any debate at all. I didn’t say ‘you must agree with their opinions’. I said that if they can’t hear a differing opinion on a first date without becoming arrogant, it’s a bad sign. Man or woman.

My friend. You very literally just proved the point. If you aren’t able to have a conversation about something outside of your interests, and if you’re not willing to entertain her interests and opinions as talking points instead of debate topics, you’re a bad date. You’re telling her right out the gate that you’re no fun.

This is a bad take. Astrology ought to be a non starter, unless you are being facetious about it. Taking astrology seriously suggests that you are epistemically broken. Possibly scientifically illiterate.
