Spring is right around the corner with warmer temperatures in the forecast, which is why we are planning to overtop the hydro spillway gates this week to melt ice and ensure the gates are operable. There will be no impact to surrounding areas and safer for our crews to maintain.

Before operations, our plant staff will go onto the river to inform ice anglers in the affected area. We are also communicating with local cities and law enforcement. We encourage anyone on the ice to always exercise caution, as no ice is 100% safe to cross.

The plant cycles river water for its operations. When the warmed water returns to the river, this can affect ice conditions during winter months, while creating a beneficial environment for fish and open-water anglers.

This weekend, the Allen S. King plant in Oak Park Heights, MN will be operating. The plant’s operations may affect ice conditions on the St. Croix River starting on Saturday.

Crews have restored power to about 90% of impacted customers in our Wisconsin and Michigan service areas and expect to have the lights back on for all customers this evening.
