The main "homosexuality themes" in Alexandre Dumas' *The Count of Monte Cristo* center on Eugénie Danglars (daughter of one of the antagonists) and her close companion Louise d'Armilly. Their relationship is strongly implied as romantic/lesbian through subtext: Eugénie openly disdains men and marriage, admires women's beauty (including Haydée's), rejects suitors, and flees with Louise disguised as a man to pursue independence as musicians. Scenes include them sharing a bed, Sappho references, and the narrator noting their "intimate friendship." Dumas never states it explicitly (19th-century norms), but early English translations often censored these passages for Victorian audiences, removing or softening the implications. It's not a central plot driver but adds to themes of freedom and rebellion.

It was banned by the Catholic Church in the 1800s as part of Alexandre Dumas' "romance novels" on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (List of Prohibited Books). Reasons cited: religious/moral conflicts, like negative portrayals of clergy and themes of revenge, infidelity, and human justice clashing with doctrine. (All Dumas' love stories were blanket-banned; the Index ended in 1966.) Some early English translations also censored "scandalous" bits like implied homosexuality for Victorian audiences. Not banned anywhere major today.

A VERY unpopular opinion; humans were never meant to be this busy. That’s why everyone is anxious and depressed.
