(Thread) 3 Breakthroughs Defying Aging: 1️⃣ Partial Cellular Reprogramming: Scientists used gene therapy (Yamanaka factors) to make old mice biologically younger – extending lifespan by 30% . Now, biotech firm Life BioSciences is seeking FDA approval for the first human trials of this age-reversal technique . It’s risky (tumors occurred in some animal tests) but potentially revolutionary.

3️⃣ Plasma Exchange: This year, a first-of-its-kind human study showed that filtering older people’s blood plasma and replacing it with a saline+albumin solution led to a 1.3-year reduction in biological age, on average . When combined with an infusion of healthy antibodies, the age reduction was ~2.6 years . Essentially, “young blood” therapies – once sci-fi – are inching toward reality, enhancing healthspan .

Two take-aways from David Furman's talk during day 1 of @LongevityDublin : (1) Trajectories of change in "aging clocks" are likely more informative than absolute age-estimates during normative aging (2) Microgravity accelerates many phenotypes of aging - perhaps accelerates biological aging overall?

Nice timing for the paper and this story to come out, as I had my first go at therapeutic plasma exchange this morning. Look at all that old man plasma they squeezed out of me 😅 In all seriousness, I'm very optimistic about this approach both for potential positive effects on aging biology and for the possibility of diluting out environmental toxins such as microplastics. Procedure was super easy. Hardest part was sitting still for 2 1/2 hours. Thanks to @CirculateHealth and @Younggren for making it possible!
