Pictures & musings of a yachtsman. Attempted a solo circumnavigation but now at a bit of a loose end.

Having just sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, I am happy to say that out of my collection of over a dozen watches, this was without a second-thought the one I packed for the trip. Rugged, waterproof & always legible, there is no better choice for blue water sailing. @NiteWatches

Great to see the ever excellent @NiteWatches are part of the Alliance of British Watchmakers (@BritWatchmakers). My Nite Alpha is now on a canvas Nato, looking great, and keeping brilliant time.

After a 32 hr journey (UK, via Canada, to Martinique) I am aboard SV Pinta (Sun Legend 41, 1986), getting ready to sail for the Azores. The skipper is Hugo, YT: boatlifeisbest. You can follow the passage with regular blog posts live from the Atlantic. my.yb.tl/aSwtS

Huge congratulations to @ineosbritannia for winning the @LouisVuitton Cup. For the first time in 60 years, Britain has a yacht competing for the oldest sporting cup in the world. Can Britannia be the first British boat to bring the @americascup home, after a 173 year wait?

@mercoglianos I don’t have full AIS track data but the ‘avoidance turn’ by Polesie might just have been a pre-planned course correction needed to stay inside the TSS. Lots of things at fault here but communications, Ch16 & DSC monitoring, AIS/RADAR alarms, are all big contributing factors.

@casioUKsupport Hello. Is it possible to see the full list of all tidal ports that you use on your watches, such as the GBX-100, please?

In 2003 these films were released, but which is the best? > The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King > Master & Commander: Far Side of the World > Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

@devansrocky1 That was years ago David. I’ve still got her. But she might go next year as I’m not earning atm and she’s expensive to maintain.

@sailorgirlHQ Listening to the radio chatter, they’re definitely hunting for breeze, but that boundary was far too close to get onto the foils then tack and stay in bounds.

@sailorgirlHQ Not convinced. Ben’s ‘I can’t see’ was re the Bottom gate due to him being on the windward helm. After rounding Giles/Ben knew exactly where the Top gate was and where they were going. Going OoB makes no logical sense when a tack onto Port was a straight reach to the Top gate.

Because they rounded with the breeze so far left, and you can hear Ben saying "I can't see". And by rounded "drifted". They were basically on non-vmg track in displacement mode under the raining cell, trying to get back to the left hand side where there was pressure.
a Savage way to Sail@_aSwtS

@sailorgirlHQ Yes, the reason to cancel was the 90 deg shift but that wasn’t called until 2 minutes after UK cleared the gate. ITA rounded then headed back up track. Even after UK gybed through the gate, seems mad not to tack onto Port (increase the ‘runway’) & head up course, ie Green option.
