So I'm somewhere in the middle ground on this. I mostly agree with the basketball point you're making. But something I've spent some time thinking on this year is that the Thunder, because of their asset surplus, can basically be any team they want. There's almost no player they can't acquire, which makes their decision to so continually emphasize defensively-oriented players interesting to me. It wasn't an identity they fell into. It was one they pretty intentionally chose, at least in so much as it's possible to make that choice. And I do think there's something to the idea that their confidence in Shai was high enough that they never felt much need to go out and find more offensively-inclined players. I don't think that carries him to the Luka or Jokic level of offensive engine, but I think it lends a bit more credence to the idea that they get to be this good on defense in part because Shai's presence makes them feel more comfortable investing less in offense.

This is such a weak argument. The Thunder don't play that way because of Shai, they play that way because that's their team identity. Shai is their offensive engine. But I don't find his playmaking to truly elevate them all that much, as someone who literally watched all his assists recently. Good passer, has some real high points and is beter than last year. But it's just not the same, at alll. That's ok! He gets his MVP! But like, we can just know better.
