Super. Alongside good governance, the team must now treat the fallout from the Middle East crisis as an immediate national economic priority. We have still not fully recovered from the aftershocks of the 2022 Ukraine war, when inflation surged, foreign-exchange reserves came under pressure, and macro stability weakened sharply. The same fault lines are again in view: imported inflation, external-sector stress, tourism disruption through Middle East connectivity, and, most seriously, the downstream risks to Nepal’s remittance economy if the region enters a prolonged slowdown. But… This crisis also presents opportunities. On tourism, Nepal may come out positioning itself as an alternative destination in South Asia, capturing demand from travelers unable or unwilling to transit through a volatile Middle East, (similar to the domestic tourism surge seen during COVID). On energy, expanded electricity utilization that NEA has been trying for years now, structurally reducing dependence on imported fuel and gas. And on the labor front, if the Middle East actually faces prolonged headwinds, Nepal may be forced to absorb returning migrants (beyond campaign slogans), this looks difficult in the near term, but with the right policies and private sector partnership, who knows, maybe it’s this pressure test that we’ve needed all along. History is clear: the biggest leaps forward are often made under pressure.
