@neheritagelib I’ve got an excellent independent councillor in St Mary’s ward - I actually see her around and she’s helped out on numerous local issues. If it wasn’t for her, who knows. I’d love to vote Labour but feel taken for granted

Quick one. How on earth are people figuring out who to vote for tomorrow when there is barely any effort by most parties to share what they actually stand for locally? Stop making me rely on national politics/geopolitics - who is going to tell me about Social Care & ASB?

@neheritagelib @BillCorcoran5 I lived on Gibson Street for years, passed the baths most days. Always fancied a look inside and always thought it was sad to see it just standing idle, slowly decaying

Possibly the saddest listed building in Newcastle, sat in limbo until its eventual demise given there's nothing to repurpose it into. 😔 I've written up a piece on the Gibson Street Baths - free to read on Patreon as it's a bit too long for over here. Link below

@JHCPAL Couple from Blyth - Newsham and Cowpen. And I genuinely don’t know why Bellingham and Chillingham are pronounced differently

I need more suggestions for "Guinevere's Guide" please. I did one daily for a year but now it's "as & when". I'm clueless south of the Tyne, so there will be plenty there that I'm oblivious to. Nth N'd is a bit patchy too. You can DM if you do not wish to spoil the surprise.🤣

@JHCPAL ‘Gosforth’ another regularly mis-pronunciated place name. “Goss fath” not “Goss fawth”

@Strombo94 Thank you. Believe me I tried to make a sequel work but wasn't able to for a variety of reasons. That said though, you should definitely play Expeditions: Rome - the devs must have read my book too because it's very similar haha

@ajpwright That's a huge shame! I really enjoyed it, I'm genuinely gutted there isn't going to be a sequel! Hopefully someone will just make the game so I can play it 🤣

Moooorning :-) Another addition to the site today, starting with the Lady Stephenson Library at Walker we discussed yesterday. Plenty of info popped on, alongside the discovery of tennis grounds that I've added to the Sports Archive. northeastheritagelibrary.co.uk/grid

One of my very favourite things I've been involved in since reviewing: My interview with Dr Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir! Jóhanna is knowledgeable AF and it was a huge privilege to talk to her about Viking women. Learn something new and read below :) spellsandspaceships.home.blog/2020/11/10/an-…

@BlogSpells Went for a run earlier and found myself singing along to Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit by Gina G. That’ll be in your head for another 8 days now. You’re welcome

Had 'Fear of the Dark' by Iron Maiden stuck in my head for about 8 days now if anyone would like to help it fly away.

@BlogSpells Definitely, will be a hell of an achievement mate. I’d suggest treat yourself to a nice book but you’ve probably got enough so do something nice - a day out somewhere.

81 days without drinking. That's 11 and a half weeks so far. Do I treat myself to something/do something nice for myself at 100 days?

@neheritagelib Used to live 5 mins walk away from here, always loved the architecture of this place, especially the added Chinese style pagoda turrets

Time for us to start a new series, and we’re in Newcastle for the first time in ages! We start at the east, and land at the Ouseburn Board School. It borders the Ballsst Hills burial ground on its western side, and was built on top of a cluster of older 19th century industrial buildings and dwellings. It was opened on November 7th 1893, exactly the same time as the Chillingham Road Board School which also still exists. These were ran by local “boards” who administered the local curriculum to suit the needs of the surrounding area. Course, boys were put to more manual tasks and girls domestic - in fact there were even on site laundries. Of course, it was also cited to decrease the number of the “helpless and thriftless” poor. The school was critically needed. This part of the city wasn’t as quiet as it is today, with 3 or 4 storey tenements and dense terraces surrounding the burn and river down every nook. In fact, in a month this place was full and Chilli Road not far from. The city was still short of 3000 spaces to fully cater for every child. It was designed by F W Rich - the man also behind Bolbec Hall and Turnbull’s Warehouse near Forth Banks. It cost just over £25000 and catered for up to 1200 boys and girls. It remained a school until the 1960s, but was later renovated to become a business centre which remains its purpose today.

🚨Just under 24 hours left on the Ash plushie! 🚨 Ash makes a stalwart guardian of the bookshelf and is unafraid of the dark. (And yep, you can lift that blindfold to check out his icy blue eyes beneath 👀) Once he's gone, he's gone forever. Link in bio.
