@angeris - for example, his initial deduction that it couldn't be friday was correct. but he extrapolated too far and that's why he ended up convincing himself it couldn't be any of the days when that's clearly not true.

@angeris it's really not that difficult to understand this problem. the point is that you can make one assumption if you have literally all other information, but that assumption isn't worth as much as "real" information, and therefore you can't "stack" assumptions-

there’s a great joke that goes something like A judge tells a condemned prisoner, “You will be executed at noon on one day next week, and the execution will be a surprise.” The prisoner reasons: “If I’m still alive by Friday morning, then it has to be Friday, so it wouldn’t be a surprise.
