Work-based learning isn’t broken - the way we design it is. This blog explores Pillar 3 of @FutureReady Pathways (Work-Based Learning) and challenges the status quo: too often, WBL is treated as a one-off experience instead of an intentional, student-centered system that builds real skills, identity, and purpose. When designed well (connected to pathways, aligned to learner goals, and grounded in real-world relevance), work-based learning can do more than check a box. It can help young people see who they are and where they’re going. It’s time to move from experiences to systems—and from employer-first thinking to learner-centered design.
