Donald Trump didn’t kill conservatism, but he did render it politically impotent when so many conservatives stuck around to cheer him on as a slim minority on a team eager to laugh at them at the end of the bench when not kicking them out of the dugout for fun.
Conservatives now need to rethink how our principles apply to America’s new problems (e.g., limiting executive power, prosecuting public/private corruption, standing against authoritarians, defending individual rights, upholding the dignity of humanity against the overweening digitization of life, etc.) and reconcile those things to a new agenda.
But most importantly, conservatives need to quit wish-casting for a GOP politics that isn’t coming back, shirk the old party jersey, and reconsider who our closest allies are—because they aren’t in the GOP anymore.
