THE BEGINNING OF WESTERN RAILWAY On this day, 170 years ago, the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway Company was incorporated by an Act of the British Parliament to connect the port of Mumbai to the cotton-growing districts of Gujarat and Central India. Construction of the line from Surat to Ahmedabad and Baroda began in May 1856. Mumbai was connected in November 1864.
