AIADMK former Minister S.P. Velumani had declared an income of just ₹4.92 lakh (including his salary of ₹4.44 lakh and ₹48,000 through other sources) for the assessment year 2017-18. However, in 2016, the Income Tax department had recovered diary notings from SRS Mining revealing that he had given ₹7 crore in cash for being distributed to various contestants and for being spent in various constituencies during the 2016 Legislative Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, after giving him an opportunity of hearing in which he feigned ignorance about the money, the I-T department passed an assessment order in 2022 treating ₹7 crore as his unexplained expenditure. Mr. Velumani filed a writ petition in 2023 challenging the assessment order. Justice C.
