Since I’m having a fun time tonight looking at old Star Trek physical media. Here’s a nice VHS release we got in the UK for Star Trek: First Contact with lenticular card.
This is currently my second favourite Star Trek film of all time. When I get around to watching it again it may be my favourite.

Mark Stone says he had a strain on his side. Was not alarmed by it at all. Just standard wear and tear from the busy schedule. Said injuries always suck but it was almost comforting to know that this injury was much less concerning than the previous ones and he knew it would heal quickly.
Added that the hit from Letang had nothing to do with it.

The most physically likely way this disaster would have started on an actual mission is some inscrutable systems failure forcing an evacuation. For example, software update breaks on life support, air goes wrong, and Watney's suit won't press. Rest of the crew have to leave him for dead.
But no-one wants to read a book that starts with "Then the status light went red for no reason."

TNG put the idea in canon that warp speed travel was tearing holes in subspace. They didn't need "The Burn". They could have just picked up that thread. A catastrophic event would have slowed down exploration and created consequential no-win scenarios when using warp drive. That's how you kick off the series: a captain arrested for using warp drive. Oh no, you made the spore drive more interesting.
