@samdblond How long have you been in SF? You’re definitely not the first. Maybe the first with this consistency

The biggest reason this is so effective is that no one has done this in SF. We're the first. Aerial advertising exists in places like Miami Beach, but I've never seen it in San Francisco. There will be others that start now because of us, but people will still think of Monaco when they see a new company advertising because we started the trend. In order to go viral with paid advertising, you have to try something new. Take risk. Be creative. Otherwise you're paying a premium just to be like everyone else with a billboard on a highway.

The Monaco Plane: Economics and Impact. If you've been in SF over the last 10 days, you've likely seen the Monaco Plane flying around. I'm receiving countless messages asking about how expensive it is and if it's working. So here are those answers:

@eersnington @Vishal_anton16 @johnyeo_ Having been only partially exposed to recent IAC practices, I see it as an infrastructure anti-pattern if terraform isn’t good enough. If you want a different DSL then yeah go for Pulumi. But it quickly increases the wtfs/minute when you get too fancy with it

@Vishal_anton16 @johnyeo_ depends on the problem you're trying to solve. terraform is really good but you can only go so far with HCL, representing your resources through off the shelf stuff. with pulumi, you get the benefit of a general purpose programming language

@DhruvAhuja2003 @zachtratar Your quote of 300 is _very_ high for startups. When I last checked around base ranges at non-AI labs basically didn’t go above above 280 (iirc Sentry had 3 open roles capping out here at one point)

i feel like this is a huge misrepresentation. No serious senior engineer is only getting 180k, their base is probably closer to 1.5x that. The actual question is whether u want 350k base + clear path to 7-800k base + liquid equity vs 300ish base + 7 figure equity package but its super illiquid and maybe worth nothing
Tanuj@tanujDE3180

A senior engineer earning $350k at a FAANG company. A senior engineer earning $180k at a startup with equity. 10 years later. Who ends up wealthier?

@mig4ng lol. NetBeans. I'm not a neovim fan. I'm a long time diehard vim user, but I draw the line of trying to turn a terminal into an IDE. But I was an Eclipse use at one point, so NetBeans is not far off for me.

@beingSimonSays yeah, sorry if I sound too defensive. I do have agents running in the background all the time. But with a ton of guardrails, evals, robust tests before anything gets close to landing. The engineering is in the latter part.

Not an unpopular take. The absolute worst times in my career were working for "engineering leaders" who were proud of how little engineering they actually had done. It wasn't as much "you don't understand our work", as bad as that is. It was much more about terrible engineering decisions based on vibes and what sales guy talked to them last.
Malte Ubl@cramforce

Since I'm on a streak of semi-unpopular management takes: This is very real. I've seen many high-powered software engineering ICs turn people managers and become completely detached from the tech. Like, you cannot imagine that they were ever truly technical. If you make the step to management you need to be paranoid this does not happen to you. The good news: AI has made this 100x easier. There is just no reason not to have an agent hacking during that 1:1 about performance scores

@AaronErickson Maybe we’re saying the same thing then. But you’re agreeing with the idea of running an agent in the background during, I see that behavior as larping as an engineer instead of being one

@beingSimonSays I dunno, if my team or I ships a breaking change, I am the one who has to stay up until its fixed. And if anyone things AI means you don't have to think about engineering problems hoo boy do I have a bridge to sell you.

@jessfraz I’m left confused by this acquisition too. This isn’t a hard problem. It wasn’t a hard problem. It seems that AI has made this look like a hard problem. I was doing this kind of work before I considered myself a competent engineer

OpenAI prove to these people you aren't retarded (I know you aren't) y'all can just do this shit yourself, ITS NOT A WHOLE FUCKING COMPANY. I wrote our generators internally before AI existed. fucking skills issue.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

Such a strange take. 1. This was an acquihire of a string eng team. Super common for this outcome to happen 2. Out of all companies, OpenAI should have the least problem rewriting an SDK generation tool using eg Codex. 3. They probably won’t do #2 but use a competing vendor!
