A billion birds die hitting windows in the US every year, mostly at houses like yours. Birds can't see glass. They see the reflection of sky and trees and fly straight into it at full speed. Songbirds, warblers, woodpeckers, the goldfinches you put a feeder out for. The birds you wanted to attract are the ones dying on your siding. A beaded curtain or a row of vertical cords hung outside the glass breaks the reflection. Decals also work. Birds register the surface as solid and avoid it. Spacing matters: cords need to be no more than 4 inches apart, vertical, and on the outside of the window (inside doesn't work because the reflection is what's killing them). The decals sold at hardware stores are usually too sparse to make a difference. A homemade curtain of paracord, jute, or beaded line costs five dollars and works dramatically better. The bird that hit your window this morning was probably alive yesterday because of how you keep your yard. It's worth five dollars and ten minutes to stop killing the rest.
