"Heart" is an often misunderstood metaphor in the Bible. Take the Shema: "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." DEUTERONOMY 6:5 (ESV) This verse is familiar, but you might be slightly surprised by the nuances of its original meaning. The word “heart” לֵבָב (lev) does literally refer to the blood-pumping organ. It’s a metaphor in Hebrew just like it is in English. But in Hebrew, it has a different meaning. Knowing something with your “heart” in English is different than knowing something with your לֵבָב in Hebrew. In English, we use “heart” as a metaphor for the “seat of our emotions.” But this isn’t exactly what it means in Hebrew. For example, a very common phrase in the Bible is “he said in his heart.” This is the normal way to say “he thought” in Hebrew. To take another example, Deuteronomy 29:3 says that God has “not given to all of you a heart to know.” In Hebrew culture, you thought with your “heart” - similarly to the way we use the word “mind” in English. In English, to know something with your heart is often to know something by intuition, not facts. But in Hebrew, to know something with your לֵבָב is to know according to facts. So in Deuteronomy 6:5 (the Shema), God is calling his people to love him with all their mental faculties, not just with their feelings or intuitions. Emotions still matter, but they aren’t the emphasis here. This verse is a call for God’s people to constantly remember God with their minds. Great question! If you're able to read aloud at a rate faster than natural speaking speed with comprehension, you should consider shifting your focus to silent reading. Oral reading (or reading aloud) is great for earlier stages of learning, especially when you're still learning and mastering pronunciation. But silent reading is the "gold standard" - you can read with greater speed, comprehension, and stamina when reading silently.

Speed. You have a need for it. Developing fluency is all about going fast. You want to get to the point where you are able to use the language automatically (without thinking about it). To learn a language, you should spend a lot more time practicing with material that you’ve already learned than you spend learning new material. When practicing, take your time and focus on getting everything correct. Don’t try to go fast. Focus on accuracy. Unfortunately, learners are typically not very good at determining the right pace. This is well documented in SLA research, and exactly why things like spaced repetition systems exist and are so effective. Additionally, we've heard many anecdotal experiences both from our users and learners using other systems/tools/materials who consistently say they don't know how fast to progress. At the end of the day, the best metric for the right pace is mastery - i.e. fluency. If you aren't achieving mastery of the material you're learning, you're moving too fast. If you are, you *may* be able to move faster. It's about finding the threshold. Yes, what causes this threshold is individual, multi-factorial, and varies day-to-day. But mastery of material, or lack thereof, will always be the best way to locate that threshold.

“You never have to wonder whether you are hitting the right pace in your learning.” It’s part of a teacher’s job to help the student find their right pace. In that sense the aim for your app is a good one. And I get that this quote is marketing language. But it’s not an ideal philosophy for learning. At the end of the day, only the student knows the right pace for them. For example, should they spend 10 minutes a day, 100 minutes, or 10 hours with your app or with a textbook, or in the scripture itself? Everyone’s capacity is intrinsically different, and it even varies day-by-day for the same person, based on many factors.
