Lesser Known story of 'Porinju' aka 'Francis'
From selling the family home at 16 to buying it back with stock market gains — the incredible journey of Porinju Veliyath, Kerala’s Small-Cap Czar.
Born in 1962 in Chalakudy village (Thrissur, Kerala) into a lower-middle-class family, financial troubles hit hard. At just 16, the family had to sell their home to clear debts. They were left with nowhere to stay.
Porinju moved alone to Ernakulam (Kochi) to support them.
He took whatever work he could find: first as an accountant (₹1,000/month), then as a telephone operator at Ernakulam Telephone Exchange (₹2,500/month).
In 1990, he took the train to Mumbai with big dreams. An acquaintance got him a job at Kotak Securities.
He started as a clerk, then became a floor trader in the open-outcry days.“Porinju” was tough for colleagues to pronounce or remember, so he adopted the English equivalent: “Francis”.
In the early 2000s, he made a bold bet: bought 8% stake in Geojit Financial Services when it was trading in single digits (company market cap ~₹2.5-3 Cr).
The founder laughed when Porinju predicted big things. Geojit rose sharply (touched ~₹280 by 2006), delivering life-changing gains.
With those profits, Porinju did something emotional: he bought back the exact family land his family had sold decades earlier due to debt. He built a beautiful farmhouse on it.
Today, he lives simply on a 10-acre organic farm in Kerala, runs Equity Intelligence, and still hunts quality small-caps with common sense.7/ From telephone operator & “Francis” on the trading floor to Small-Cap Czar with multibagger convictions — Porinju’s story shows resilience, patience, and belief in Indian businesses. One only needs common sense to make money in stocks, he says. What a full-circle redemption! #PorinjuVeliyath #Investing #IndianMarkets

@DFinMirror It's a common mindset of most people in India to panic on everything happening all around the world,
Modiji should have avoided that Covid thing in parliament 😅

If I invest in Technology:
I might get big returns, fast.
Or lose it just as quickly.
If I invest in Manufacturing:
I get smaller returns, but steady growth.
I don’t blame investors.
They want speed.
They want to pivot fast, flip big,
and move on to the next thing.
Facts in manufacturing:
- money locked in CAPEX: land + machines
- takes years to see ROI
- hard to pivot
- requires constant reinvestment
But right now:
Tech is getting crowded.
AI is eating margins.
While India still imports products
which should be made here.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
If you are an investor, let’s talk.

Is this the attack on Asia in the Asian 21st century??
President Trump claims that we don't get affected with the ongoing developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
How can someone who started the war say something such irresponsible about the sensitivity of the location through which there can be livelihood issues if things escalates & this War in West Asia continues for next week's.
Hope the West isn't here to disrupt further peace in Asia.
