Sometimes it feels like that 15 years ago it was more about specs, protocols, and interoperability. While nowadays we are faced with more gatekeeping and are stuck in a lot more silos. Am I wrong?

@cowtowncoder We were in similar situation a year ago. TBH, I liked the hand washing. We went back to machine, but we were MUCH better about keeping up with the dishes when hand washing.

Fun times: our Miele dishwasher inspected by a repairsguy. Found multiple leaks (unusual for 4yo), estimate parts: $800. Better: new Bosch would take 6 months (supply-chain). Even crappy GE or whatever from HD, early January. Will be fun Holiday Season handwashing F#$*(#$ dishes

Excalidraw ( @excalidraw ) really is VERY good. Has replaced Omnigraffle for all my drawing needs.

Ok, informal Poll for anyone who actually sees this message: which Mastodon server did you choose? Asking for a friend :)

@osi @bluxte @tcurdt @urbit Any sane impl would be hugely multi-tenant in reality, but the processing and data is owned/controlled by the end user, not the app author, and from their perspective they are only tenant.

@osi @bluxte @tcurdt @urbit Yeah, n3xt was going down this path too, in some iterations. I think go-to-market as "user-owned (and uninstallable) backend for app" in existing app store is most viable path. Logically, a single-tenant Parse or Firebase attached to an install model you understand.

@tcurdt @bluxte I think we are years out from it, and that "it" will appear from apple/google making it a personal phone backend where you can install continuous processing stuff.

@tcurdt @bluxte Brings me back to the idea of "personal infra" -- I don't want to make my laptop the hub of that identity, but I don't want to trust random clever-name admins either. Want AWS analogue of my phone, with similar easy install/run model for apps.

1) Safari keeps a quite long history 2) I apparently haven’t gone to many things starting with “home” in a while #ning

@tcurdt Implement xmpp server, then stop federating with other xmpp servers, then stop allowing xmpp

@brianm ...just so I don't misinterpret: what's "the way of gtalk"?

@tcurdt There is no trusted host yet, and you need to understand too much to even realize it, so far. The question will be, if a trusted host gets meaningful mindshare, will it federate? I suspect it’ll want to go the way of gtalk.

@brianm True. But what does that even mean in the fediverse? I guess the best thing to do is to use an alias on the own domain, maybe run an instance just for the family. I'd love to see a decentralised Twitter alternative succeed but the current version feels to have little upsides.

@brianm The OP claimed he joined before that was the headline. "I joined that server more than 5 years ago when it was a lot more tech oriented." I have no idea of what he wrote is wrong or true. 🤷‍♂️ To me it still shows a fundamental problem. It's just not the new hope as is.

Rust `tracing` crate seems to be the new logging hotness, and it seems nice, but is there any convenient way to get `env_logger` type functionality for it?

@tcurdt @janl A decent index and browser for content from a major digital content merchant which doesn't provide such a tool or the APIs to build one. Involves user-interactive scraping of said digital content metadata (not the content itself), and Tauri made that easy.

@brianm @janl Can your reveal for what you are using it? Just curious :) The getting started was - pretty impressive. From zero to a dmg in a few seconds.

@tcurdt @janl Am using Tauri right now. So far works great, but I have not asked it for anything truly weird yet.

@brianm @janl I prefer svelte and solid - but the react ecosystem is hard to beat. AppKit - well, I still prefer native apps and I do like Swift. But pleasant... let's say Apple seems to have a different focus. For desktop projects I am tempted to give tauri.app a try.
