Today, I had the opportunity to show members of the European Parliament’s Committee for Development how our 🇪🇺 Global Gateway Strategy is helping fragile countries. Spanning humanitarian aid, the provision of basic services, and development projects, we address every aspect of human development. Currently, Global Gateway projects are underway in 60 % of fragile countries worldwide, including over half of the most extremely fragile ones. Such success relies on effective coordination among all Commissioners responsible for development policies, which is why I was pleased to attend today’s session alongside Commissioner @hadjalahbib. At the @wef in Davos, the bilateral meetings are as important as the debate panels. Today, I held key bilateral meetings to advance the Global Gateway strategy. Let me introduce my counterparts: 👑 H.M. the King Philippe of Belgians: I highlighted Belgium’s contributions to Global Gateway projects, including vaccine production in Africa, hydrogen production in Namibia or the Lobito Corridor. 🌍 Duma Gideon Boko, President of Botswana: We explored partnerships for sustainable infrastructure and local value chain development in the countries in the South of Africa. 🤝 @KGeorgieva, Managing Director, IMF: We talked about opportunities to align international financing tools with the EU’s goals for sustainable development. 🚗 Thomas Schäfer, CEO of @VW: Our discussion focused on future of automotive industry and securing critical materials for the automotive industry.

Today, I am departing for the World Economic Forum, where global leaders gather to address the most pressing challenges of our time. This year, I have the privilege of being the first 🇪🇺 Commissioner for @EU_Partnerships to present the EU’s Global Gateway strategy at this prestigious event.

Effective cooperation with the European Investment Bank is essential for the success of our 🇪🇺 Global Gateway strategy and for the international engagement of European businesses. Today, I discussed with the President of @EIB, @NadiaCalvino, how our cooperation should advance. We agreed on the need to collaborate on projects where, together with our industries, we can contribute to the sustainable development of our partners.

Sargassum seaweed affects millions of people, particularly across the Caribbean, causing significant losses to communities reliant on tourism and fisheries. It also poses health risks to local populations, while cleanup costs can exceed $1 million USD per kilometer annually. Through the Global Gateway Strategy, we aim to tackle this challenge and incentivize the seaweed’s removal by developing a sustainable value chain for its economic utilization, such as in cosmetics or as an energy source. Together with the Government of Grenada, we 🇪🇺 have launched an Expression of Interest initiative, inviting companies to remove 10,000 tons of sargassum annually by 2026. I believe that soon more countries will follow.
