I wonder if there are some topics that either don't get resolved in a sufficient enough way to make it into the general knowledge, or are sufficiently faddish that the topic sort of gets forgotten and then resurrected, disrupting the cumulative aspect of science. 2/2

I wonder why scientific fields, including psychology, revisit and "rediscover" certain topics over time, basically ignoring prior work. We can just be cynical and say people don't read enough or are purposely selling old wine in new bottles. But I don't think that's it. 1/2

Does anybody have any leads on papers that compare psychiatric treatment efficacy over the last ~50 years? My search terms (e.g., "over time") are not really helping to get at what I'm looking for....

@EikoFried I found Chapter 5 (Resampling Methods) in "An Introduction to Statistical Learning" by James, Witten, Hastie, and Tibshirani really helpful for understanding this issue. I believe the text is freely available.

Seen repeated concerns about that leave-one-out cross-validation approaches overfit data. Would love to learn more, is there literature on this?

@cgbeevers At a minimum for sure. Though, you might not be surprised how often these are just completely ignored. :-)

It's staggering how few submitted abstracts contain basic study info (eg sample size). Do we think structured abstracts (eg that require background, method, results sections) improve on this?

@aidangcw Maybe include in the instructions to authors a checklist of items that should ideally be included in the abstract for the journal?

I'm asking because I'm considering implementing them at the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science. My impression is that structured abstracts help with this, but figured posing the question here couldn't hurt to help inform my thinking.

Results from associative processing may often be a starting point, but there can be interplay between associative and effortful cognitive processes and a person's goals can influence which type of processing is dominant.

The degree of control over attention can be compared to say breathing which is a process that can operate largely automatically but can be also be controlled. Just my 2 ct
