@SpaceInMiBrain @DJSnM There's a lot of margin in the BE-4s uprate the thrust and use the short Centaur you'll have more LEO payload. Probably could loose the AJ-10 and part of the SM fuel load. Dragon gets into LEO with only 4 Dracos which are lower performance than the 8 R-4Ds on the ESM.

Vulcan-Centaur V is borderline for getting Orion to orbit. It's listed max payload with 6 SRBs is 27t, basically equal to the listed wet mass of Orion+ESM. However, it has to get off the pad with the >7t LAS. The ESM needs side panel "fairings" around it. C-V has to support that mass at however many g's Vulcan reaches going uphill. Yes, the LAS and panels will jettison but the mass is there till they do. Granted, it won't be carrying the usual fairings but that LAS is damned heavy Idk if it's impossible but if you do a Short on this please show us the math.

With Orion being set for a Centaur V upper stage NASA could start launching it into LEO on Vulcan. Then there would be no need for Starliner, for LEO crew redundancy. And if a ferry stage were implemented to take it to the moon then SLS isn’t needed for Artemis. Boeing would not be happy.
