Humans also judge autonomous vehicles differently than human drivers. A human mistake is seen as unfortunate but normal. When an autonomous vehicle hesitates or makes a small error, it becomes proof that the entire technology is broken. That double standard hides the reality that human driving causes over a million road deaths globally every year. Autonomy is not failing. It’s progressing the same way aviation, the internet, and smartphones once did, slowly at first, then all at once. The real issue isn’t that the technology isn’t advancing. It’s that people expect breakthroughs to look like instant perfection, when in reality they look like gradual learning.
