The American impulse to see the world burning and their own country shining is something to behold.
Europeans live longer, are happier, work less, are healthier and less overweight, have more income after taxes and healthcare expenses, less opiod ODs and so on.

I keep reflecting on my Europe trip with sadness. It feels like every thing is downstream of a failure of economic adaptation and that failure is downstream of a civilizational collapse. The semiconductor industry in Europe used to be a solid player. Now it felt like every company is holding on for dear life in increasingly obscure parts of the value chain. Industrial air bag chips or some shit. Whereas the rest of the world is moving to put everything in low node digital, the Europeans lack the R & D dollars and so are trying to carve out a niche in some obscure process. The Chinese are eating them alive. The Europeans don’t have the technical muscle to stay competitive nor the industrial muscle the Chinese have to build scale. And downstream of that, quality of life is clearly dropping. Their cities feel gutted, filled with loitering immigrants who are taking and taking from the welfare state, welfare states now unsupported by economic growth. Paris and Milan suburbs have ACTUAL no-go zones, not like what people claim New York to be. It feels like something died in the European soul and they just threw their hands up and submitted to crude zero growth socialism, where the only industry left is tourism. Maybe it was post war malaise. How could you go from ruling the world to becoming cultured Thailand? I don’t get it.
