Almost no one, except millions of schoolchildren, because one of the astronauts was a teacher. There's a reason it's a generation X trauma more than any other. Not only were we watching live, we'd spent weeks doing "teacher in space" activities ahead of it, and some of us even dressed up that day. We literally shared classrooms so everyone could see it, gaslighting fuck.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.

If you are Gen X, I know you cannot watch a spaceship launch without anxiety because we were all traumatized by the Challenger explosion.

@nickimoraa Not just Gen X. I was in college, watching before going to my work study job, and remember it vividly. I broke the news to everyone at work.

@nickimoraa Here's what I don't get. There've been lots of shuttle launches since 1986. And Challenger wasn't a moon mission. So why is this causing PTSD for people?

@nickimoraa What nonsense, there were MANY successful launches after Challenger and the problem that caused the Challenger accident (o-rings) was fixed. it's not a problem any more.

@nickimoraa Challenger’s shadow still lingers for Gen X, turning every launch into a quiet, anxious prayer for safe ascent.

@foreveralone11w No, because I know there's been a ton of launches between that one and now the rest of you act like there's only been one other launch in the entire history of time

I just watched Artemis launch and I’m wondering how many people my age held their breath watching this takeoff. I saw the challenger explode on TV in class at my HS.

In a shocking stunner, Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro is out, and two-time former CEO Bob Iger is once again heading Disney. D’Amaro now becomes the shortest tenured CEO in Disney history. Iger appears set to be CEO for life. You really just can’t make this stuff up!

@vmp_III Yeah they will probably make statues warding birds off. Sorta like how on roofs around the USA they have big fake owls so that no bird comes near

@emzanotti Like you said you don't remember that part. It was common to watch the shuttle launches at least here in Florida

I remember Columbia, not Challenger, but I think this is wrong. Teachers competed for Christa McAuliffe’s spot. There was a full court press on incorporating Challenger into elementary education. It wasn’t typical to watch a shuttle liftoff, but Challenger’s was intentionally broadcast to schools.

@cmlebugg @Chloe444___ Oof. I really don’t want to lose the effect. It’s been working for years without problem. Maybe add a fake statue of a beast that would scare them away? Use different material for the hair?

WOAH! Brand new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro has quietly unveiled plans to build a successor to the Fountain of Nations where a planter currently sits in the center of EPCOT. Not a bad first official move as CEO!

@crematedplastic It’s wild how they actually had a stunt man flying. I read a while back about what he used. It’s like an air propulsion device. Easier to just call it a jet pack
