@IAmClintMurphy @SusanHayes_ When I left the United States for work I had such massive cultural misalignment. I began to realize our work culture is toxic and exploitative for the benefits of a few and that we are brainwashed from kindergarten with rhetoric about country and work and “freedom”.

Here's the best career advice I can give you after 24+ years climbing the corporate ladder: 1. Forget about work-life balance

@IAmClintMurphy Thanks for a great view on how different generations view work and how older (often white) males don’t recognize that what worked in a different world of work 20+ years back doesn’t work now. Nor is it accepted by today’s generation, nor should it have ever been acceptable.

I nearly went a whole week, without someone sending my the “Voice Activation Elevator with Scottish Accents video”. Nearly… I reckon it’s been “eleven” years now, it certainly feels like it! 😂

This is going to be a CNN Murder Mystery in a few years. One of those stories about how the husband killed his wife for the money, they were on the verge of divorce and she found out about his 25 year old girlfriend and their shared apartment. Dinner hun? cnn.com/2024/02/26/bus…

You make a deal with the Devil and you get the horns and the fire. China is the going to make America look like a warm fuzzy bunny when they take over with their style of rule. Be careful where you let your greed take you. 20min.ch/story/sr-techn…

@BonesMoses @mipsytipsy Depends on if they align with your management theory. Hire good people, limit impediments and have a vision/goal that is clear and having no manager might be far more effective than having an indecisive micromanager who doesn’t grant autonomy or play transparent.

Managers exist specifically to remove impediments. You can look at them like secretaries for the engineers. Not having any lowers velocity in real terms. "Wiring the Winning Organization" by Gene Kim and Steven Spear discuss this more eloquently.

"My engineering org has 40 engineers in it, but the CEO won't let me hire any dedicated engineering managers. He says we need everyone writing code, and can't take the hit to our velocity. I think he's wrong but am struggling to make the case.. help??" 😱 charity.wtf/2024/01/05/que…

@sotulana @abarrallen Consensus is an excuse. Consensus has taken the place of radical transparency, which is what is really required. The world is not a better place because of groupthink. It’s a place where big problems don’t get solved because they threaten to undermine the group dynamic.

In a turnaround, you’re more likely to succeed by blitzing through initial actions straight out of the gate than cuddling and being soft. Any manager who gives a whiff of displeasure needs to be part of the wipeout. It’s a challenge for someone like me who leans towards making people happy, finding consensus. In every company where I’ve waited, I still end up taking same actions but wasted time. Sucks.

I'm currently reading the section of Steve Job's biography where he re-founds Apple / comes back as CEO. He: -fired the whole board except 1 person -had every team present their products to him to justify their existence -cut many, many products (& 3000 people) -spent 3 hours with his marketing agency per week & lots of time with design team -simplified all products to a 2 X 2 Matrix (Pro vs Consumer; Desktop vs. Handheld / Mobile) -re-priced stock options Many companies (& VC funds) who raised a lot of capital will likely need their own 're-founding' moments to adjust to the new market.

@scott_lowe This happened to me. "They were just borrowing it" to run drugs back and forth through the Arizona desert. When the clutch got stuck from them riding the clutch petal and welding itself to the flywheel they abandoned it and I got it back.
