@srinivasan_k @narayananh @narendramodi There’s no need to do anything. If the 84th constitution amendment bill is allowed to lapse, delimitation will automatically happen as per population data based on 2026 census.

@narayananh @csrinathin @narendramodi Delimitation cannot happen on population that why there is freeze. Either extend the freeze or have a commission or committee to discuss and agree on the delimitation. This cannot be pushed through

Did the BJP table this bill, fully expecting to fail, so that they could bring in delimitation based on a fresh population census?
If yes, and that was expected, why did the Opposition fall for it, given that pop-based delimitation is likely to hurt them way more?

On the Women’s Reservation Bill: read the fine print. The BJP called for a Special Session in the middle of state elections, over two and a half years after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in 2023, only to confirm that it cannot be implemented without a Census and delimitation. Let us be very clear: We want the Women’s Reservation Bill to be implemented NOW. Tamil Nadu was among the earliest to implement reservation for women in local bodies. Our concern is with delimitation, which requires careful thought to ensure it is fair, especially for southern states. We asked for consultation, clarity, and consensus. At the very least, the Bill could have been delinked and implemented. The NDA could have delinked it. They chose not to. They could have used this time to consult states on delimitation. They chose not to. They could have addressed these concerns in the Bill. They chose not to. This is not justice. This is not intent. This is optics. Women in Tamil Nadu see through this. Women across India are not a vote bank. They are watching. The truth is simple: the BJP could have delivered. आज लोकसभा में बहुत अजीब दृश्य दिखा।
नारी शक्ति वंदन अधिनियम के लिए जरूरी संविधान संशोधन बिल को कांग्रेस, TMC, DMK और समाजवादी पार्टी ने पारित नहीं होने दिया। महिलाओं को 33% आरक्षण देने के बिल को गिरा देना, उसका उत्साह मनाना और जयनाद करना सचमुच निंदनीय और कल्पना से परे है।
अब देश की महिलाओं को लोकसभा और विधानसभा में 33% आरक्षण, जो उनका अधिकार था, वह नहीं मिल पाएगा। कांग्रेस और उसके सहयोगियों ने यह पहली बार नहीं किया, बल्कि बार-बार किया है। उनकी यह सोच न महिलाओं के हित में है और न देश के।
मैं उन्हें बताना चाहता हूँ कि नारी शक्ति के अपमान की यह बात यहाँ नहीं रुकेगी, दूर तक जाएगी। विपक्ष को ‘महिलाओं का आक्रोश’ न सिर्फ 2029 लोकसभा चुनाव में, बल्कि हर स्तर, हर चुनाव और हर स्थान पर झेलना पड़ेगा।

And they still voted against the bill, because they never wanted the women’s reservation bill to succeed. That is their true intent.
In DMK’s growing list of achievements for the DMK in the last 5 years: 2080 Sexual Assaults, 39,999 POCSO cases, and one more feather in their cap; Anti-Women reservation party.

BIG: So the AMENDED Women’s reservation bill fails the Lok Sabha test. NO two-thirds majority required. REPEAT: if there was genuine seriousness in making women’s reservation a reality before 2029 GE, then why not reserve 1/3rd in present Lok Sabha of 543. Or would the male MPs have not accepted it? (IMPORTANT: the Nari Shakti Vandan constitution amendment bill 2023 has already been passed. If serious, fast track that too!)

That’s foolish. That reservation cannot come into place until a delimitation is completed.

For clarity: Women Reservation Act, that is, 33% reservation for women is alive and in effect from 16.4.2026. All that Govt needs to do is to bring a Bill to identify and reserve those 33% seats among the existing 543 seats.

@bseshadri Most likely only by 2034. A delay of 11 years for the women’s reservation to see implementation post passing of the bill.
And a natural disadvantage to the south and no scope of improving their representation

@bseshadri If an effort was not made by the govt to bring in amendment, the freeze on delimitation would lapse and automatic delimitation would happen as per the 2026 census as and when the data is published and a new parliament with new strength and women’s reservation will come into force

This is the point @mosquitomani made yday.. The NDA Govt is under no obligation to pass this bill.. It can simply let the old act of 2002 expire later in 2026 and then automatically figures from the latest census will go towards delimitation commission...

What happens if delimitation is delayed or not undertaken? If nothing is done, Articles 81, 82 and 330A will automatically trigger after the next Census, leading to the redistribution of the existing 543 seats purely based on population. Take Kerala, from 20 seats today, it could drop to 14 if seats are redistributed based on projected 2027 population. The Modi Government’s proposal ensures the opposite, protecting existing representation while increasing seats. This is a clear case of gain, not loss. Watch my comments in the Lok Sabha today.

My guess is that it was written in George Soros’s office in New York.
The word "gerrymander" is typically used in US politics for delimitation. This word was coined by former US Vice President Elbridge Gerry in 1812.
The writer of this post was apparently not aware that this word is not commonly used in India and you can't expect the brain from Rahul Gandhi.

I would like to appeal to all Members of Parliament…
Please reflect upon your conscience, remembering the women in your own families.
The legislation to ensure women’s reservation in legislative bodies is a significant opportunity to do justice to women of our nation.
Please do not deprive our Nari Shakti of new opportunities.
If this amendment is passed unanimously, it will further empower the women of our country and strengthen our democracy.
Let us come together today to create history.
Let us ensure that the women of India, who are half of the nation’s population, receive their rightful due.

Parliament is discussing a historic legislation that paves the way for women’s reservation in legislative bodies. The discussions, which began yesterday, lasted till around 1 AM and have continued since the House proceedings began this morning.
The Government has addressed all apprehensions and misconceptions relating to the legislation with facts and logic. All concerns have been addressed and any gaps in information have also been filled.
For nearly four decades, this issue of women’s reservation in legislative bodies has been inordinately delayed. Now is the time to ensure that half of the nation’s population receives its rightful due in decision making. Even after so many decades of Independence, it is not right that women in India have such limited representation in this area.
In a short while from now, voting will take place in the Lok Sabha. I urge and appeal to all political parties to reflect carefully and take a sensitive decision by voting in favour of women’s reservation.
On behalf of our Nari Shakti, I also request all members not to do anything that may hurt the sentiments of women across India. Crores of women are watching us…our intent and our decisions. I once again request that everyone support the amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
