Senator Andy Kim
Senator Andy Kim@SenatorAndyKim·
For decades, the Presidential Management Fellows Program has allowed Americans from all walks of life to enter public service and work on behalf of the American people. This week, President Trump continued his attack on public servants by ending the program.

Senator Kim got his start through this program. So did thousands of talented Americans who just want to give back. To fight for them and show that service matters, Senator Kim will introduce a bill to codify this program into law and launch a new era of public service in our country. Stay tuned.
The Washington Post@washingtonpost

The Trump administration ended the Presidential Management Fellows Program in a late-night executive order Wednesday, axing a decades-old government initiative that has long been celebrated as a pipeline to draw talent into civil service careers. wapo.st/3ENC2VX

@NPRCoryTurner That's about what I was thinking. All of this is difficult to swallow esp considering it felt we were encouraged to wait. FFEL folks have really gotten the short end of everything it seems. Still, I'd rather see more people helped than the whole program fail.

@ctasich Great Q. I honestly don't know. It feels like the kind of thing you say when you know you've just hurt someone, whether or not it's true. I don't doubt they'll try, but the fact that they made this choice suggests REAL legal danger here.

Re: the 1.5 MIL borrowers with Direct Loans + FFEL. DLs will qualify for relief, FFEL will not -- per ED. Some (many?) will max their relief on those DLs. But ED doesn't know how many will get less relief as a result. Less muddy, still muddy.

@NPRCoryTurner Thanks for all your work on this. I keep seeing that Ed is working on other ways to include FFEL borrowers. Do you have any insight into what other approaches may be possible? Or should we read this as Ed saying, "we really want to include you but just can't?"

@ctasich Only the DL will qualify for relief. Borrowers can still consolidate FFEL to qualify for PSLF or IDR, but not broad debt relief.

@NPRCoryTurner @bmckib @prettyeyes1984 Is a Perkins Loan issued before 2010 but currently held by DOE considered a direct loan or does that only apply to loans after 2010? I believe my loan was initially issued from my school but purchased by DOE at some point.

@ctasich @bmckib @prettyeyes1984 I was told yesterday by an administration official that FFEL folks who also have a Direct Loan can still consolidate and qualify for relief. I don't see that language on their site. But yes, I was ASSURED by admin it's true.

@bmckib @prettyeyes1984 @NPRCoryTurner I read DOEs response as saying many with commercially held loans (excluded) also have Ed held loans (included) so they still get something. Are you saying these people can still consolidate after 9/29? For instance, I have 1 Ed held Perkins loan and 3 non-Ed FFELP Stafford loans.

@FAFSA We were literally TOLD to wait and to not consolidate as it may slow the process. Devasting. I feel sick.

@NashSevereWx You always do an excellent job communicating uncertainty. The snow disparities between Williamson and Davidson really validate the care you put into what you communicate. I really admire how well you all do your thing. Nashville is lucky to have you.

You’re right, Joey. Good reminder. Don’t feed the trolls. Weather forecasting is hard. So is ignoring people who think it’s easy. ^wm

Where is the highest place in the world now for new cases per population? Tennessee (new); Ohio 2nd, still rising. These are the only places with >1000/M globally.

As someone who grew up in rural America, I appreciate the nuance and empathy that @ClareMalone has brought to political journalism. Sorry to see her go from @FiveThirtyEight but excited to keep reading her wherever she lands.

So, I got laid off late last week as part of the ABC News layoffs. I won’t lie, it was a bit of a surprise, but if anything 2020 has been perspective-setting & I’m grateful for the past 5 years, if a little sad. So...onward. Some of my best work follows. (Hi, editors!) 1/

@ClareMalone What am I supposed to do without my weekly dose of a quippy @ClareMalone keeping @NateSilver538 honest? But really this is terrible news. Your recent piece on how Trump changed America was beautiful. Hope you land somewhere deserving of your talent!
