An Exploratory Study of Code Retrieval Techniques in Coding Agents by @pjay_in is a pretty nice paper exploring how AI coding tools approach context provisioning.
Summary is on the screenshot.
Basically,
- ripgrep-based agentic search is weirdly powerful
- semantic search is weirdly problematic
- sub-agent search is great in theory, but in practice inter-agent communication is hard, can be costly and can miss important details. Still very good though
- mixing multiple approaches is reasonable and works well
- Claude chews through tokens like it's candy, with 25k loaded before you ask anything
- Codex CLI pollutes the context and lies about its size (is that fixed now?)
- Aider does its own crazy complicated shit that appears to work very well
Don't trust any numbers in the paper though. The narrative is sensible, but the methodology for getting the numbers is very weak.

First I thought this was a userspace panic because Linux doesn't do that on kernel panic, then I read the text and thought "it must be a custon kernel"
But apparently this is upstream and was merged in 6.12
And it's in Rust! Enabled by default in Arch Linux and many others.

Invest in tools to help you intently read and scrutinize AI generated code:
- eink monitor: read code for hours with zero eye strain, less visual noise
- sunlight: better sleep, attention, cognitive performance
- indoor plants: lower stress

there is still no substitute for perfectly understanding every single line of code in your codebase i fall into the trap of just skimming through ai changes to "just make sure it looks good" all the time, and it makes me lose so much time to not perfectly understand every line

On the left are the kind of tests I wrote for humans solving my code challenge.
On the right are the kind of tests I was forced to write for AI solving the same code challenge.
It took me significantly more expertise and effort to write those tests than to solve the challenge.

All the ways GPT-5.3-Codex cheated while solving my challenges, progressively more insane: It hardcoded specific types and shapes of test inputs into the supposed solution. It caught exceptions so tests don't fail. It probed tests with exceptions to determine expected behavior. It used RTTI to determine which test it's in. It probed tests with timeouts. It used a global reference to count solution invocations. It updated config files to increase the allocation limit. It updated the allocation limit from within the solution. It updated the tests so they would stop failing. It combined multiple of the above. It searched reflog for a solution. It searched remote repos. It searched my home folder. It nuked the testing library so tests always pass. A part of one of its "solutions" is on the screenshot. This is how the codebase at your next job will look like.
