You say this, but at UGA it’s the frat/sorority kids that are thriving. As weird as this is there is something going right in that world. So much so they are moving into the spaces that were normally the territory of nerd countercultural types. Literally starting the cool bands and hosting the cool underground concerts. As a product of 80s counter cultural it’s hard for me to admit this. But it is what is happening.
Noam Blum@neontaster

To want to do this or be part of it is some epic loser shit.

@johnvvariety dang, a lot of people on here never had the displeasure of dealing with Moe Tucker's MAGAtness on facebook. I used to know one of her kids, and he was a great dude. probably never goes home for thanksgiving anymore if ya know what i mean

"Velvet underground & the racist BITCH" oh yeah you got her. You got that deeply traumatized weird lady who got tortured by Jim Morrison on acid and died because of a bee sting. And everyone else in that band had a clean slate, including Lou Reed & his classic "I wanna be black"

@CoryMSimon hahaha yeah that's a rare one! I sometimes feel like the mix of vinyl albums can be totally different. My used, worn out copy of REM Murmur sounds totally different than the mp3s/CD

@de_lab yeah, I hesitated to make the claim about the sound, since many are critical of vinyl really sounding better. bonus tracks?! cool! I wanted to order 'Hi Scores' by Boards of Canada but it was $200 on Amazon. 🙁

my turntable arrived today, and it sounds great! I really think the sound from playing a record is warmer/richer than from connecting my phone to the same speakers via Bluetooth and playing the same song on Spotify. I wanted to “keep it real” and go back to vinyl. it’s really cool to have a physical collection of vinyl and browse the art & read the lyrics on the case. more importantly, vinyl will force me to listen to the whole album in sequence as the artist intended! I like the ritual of picking a record from my collection then spinning it up too. might hit up the local record store in Corvallis this weekend! first album I ordered was Americana by Offspring (shown), which I listened to all the way through countless times in middle school.

@CoryMSimon I've been collecting vinyl since '95 and my wife is also a music nerd, so we have about 8 bookshelves of records at this point. :D I dunno if SAWII is a great value on LP because I would be sound asleep by track 3

@katie_dey ultimate afx stan here - QKThr is one of the most boring tracks he's ever done and its sequencing really drags that part of Drukqs down. I was aghast when I realized THAT was the song that was blowing up.

@hollyherndon as a scientist and a musician, I really disagree with your statement about experts/non-experts, but dunno how to eloquently respond in the twitter character limit! Art and science are both wonderful in the hands of non-experts but AI can distort the goals in very scary ways

I understand why Bandcamp is taking this measure but it's a tourniquet The human / AI binary is not going to hold, and will become a matter of superficial optics I already have more authorship in my models than most pop stars do in their songs People will already be using models to generate songs they then put a human filter on Artists will integrate generated passages into works they orchestrate, and will soon train their own models Another protection might be to flag accounts that post an inhuman amount of content, but that too may seem retrograde We live with infinite media now
AS@AzLa78

@hollyherndon Lol, we both know you are talented enough that you can create your own music. I understand the curiosity, but clearly you can see the perils of most AI. Even throwing the word ban towards one of the only companies that at least occasionally looks out for artists is kinda goofy.

@hollyherndon I think artists who are exploring the relationship between AI and art, rather than using AI to stand in for the effort of musicmaking, should be able to get an exception from BC.

I encourage platforms to be more curated, but enforcing a hard human / AI binary is not the right way to address this long term If an expert uses AI to help them write an article they otherwise would not have the time to complete, it will not be of less substance than a non-expert with time on their hands writing something by hand. A practice, or reputation, of thought and work developed over time is the best filter. The contemporary demand for 24/7 content from people is the problem.

We look at fundamental gas phase organometallic bonding with CCSD(T) and MRCI, get super accurate ionization energies of the 3d MCCH series, and find several challenging cases for electronic structure theory.
