Direct union with the gods (Theurgy) is a grace outside of philosophy; it does not rely on intellectual understanding. Otherwise would assume divine acts are somehow made fruitful by our intellection - when in reality, any practitioner knows that they often bypass our understanding. As Iamblichus said, “They are more undefiled than knowledge, and too transcendent to be divided.”

“[Humans] only `[know]` God by getting to this Silence, in which naught but the creative words of true Power are heard. They then no longer conceive formal ideas in their mind, but utter living ideas in all acts—thoughts, words, and deeds.” - Chaldæan Oracles, GRS Mead In Chaldean and Neoplatonic Theurgy, there exists the notion of the synthemata. These are symbols from nature or art that radiate the power of the divine, up to and including the Transcendent Fire itself. From nature, these synthema can include feathers, rocks, shells, leaves. If you’ve ever had a Native American friend you may noticed they have a medicine pouch. This very sacred, personal item radiates “magic” or the power of the divine as it manifests itself to the carrier. Medicine pouches can contain items like those I described and perhaps man-made items meaningful and sacred to the person. According to historian, Sara Iles-Johnston, theurgists take the symbols and synthema that the paternal Intellect of the Chaldean mythos distributes throughout the created world and rearrange them into meaningful configurations. You can create these configurations over and over. This shows that reality is not static in Platonic cosmology but also less fluid than where an underlying chaos is assumed. In their rites, theurgists line up the synthemata and align themselves with the meaning of the artifacts, allowing them to prepare their soul for personal interaction with the divine. The notion of the pure token comes from the Chaldean Oracles: "Arrayed from head to toe with a clamorous light, armed in mind and soul with a triple-barbed strength, you must cast into your imagination the entire token of the triad, and not go toward the empyrean channels in a scattered way, but with concentration." - fragment 2 And: "But the Transcendent Intellect does not receive the will of (the soul) until (the soul) emerges from forgetfulness and speaks a word, remembering the pure, paternal token." - fragment 109 The pure token - or synthema - is revealed by the holy Iynges, messengers emanated directly from the Transcendent Fire. They speak to us in numerous ways, often in prayer and dreams. In my effort to spread the word about Chaldean Theurgy I use art along with personal sayings as synthema. The image and quote at the top of this post give you an idea of how I use them in my writings in spreading the word about Theurgy.
